Datawind Ubislate 7Ci tablet - World's cheapest tablet computer 2014

Datawind Ubislate 7Ci tablet - World's cheapest tablet computer 2014

A Brampton businessman says a tablet computer sold for less than $40 will help bridge the growing “digital divide” in Canada.

Datawind has released its Ubislate 7Ci tablet in Canada, offering consumers an updated version of the device created for Indian schools.

“The development of the tablet stemmed from the realization that lack of Internet adoption in many parts of the world was primarily because of lack of affordability,” said Suneet Singh Tuli, Brampton resident and CEO of technology firm Datawind. “Our aim is to bridge the gap by offering cost-effective, high-specification devices and internet-access that offer excellent value to all.”
The UbiSlate tablets are being introduced to the Canadian market following a successful run in India, where, according to the company, sales have managed to leapfrog the Apple iPad.

Starting at $37.99, the seven-inch tablet computer runs on the Android operating system and comes pre-loaded with apps for education, entertainment and gaming.

The device uses technology that Apple has since abandoned.

They use touch screens and are powered by a Cortex A8 – 1Ghz processor like the original Apple iPad and contains 512MB of RAM, twice that of the original iPad.

But Tuli said tablets aren’t out to compete with the iPad, but rather intended to give students access to technology.

“We are working to bring affordable technology to the many millions of households who are currently excluded from benefiting from the digital revolution”, said Tuli. Tuli lives in Brampton and works out of Datawind’s corporate office in Mississauga.

The company is pushing Statistics Canada data that shows a digital divide in Canada that directly linked to household income. For instance, Internet use for the richest top quartile of household income is at 94.5 percent, but it drops to only 62.5 percent at the bottom quartile.

Here’s what $37.99 gets you:

• 7-inch, 800-by-480 resolution capacitive touchscreen

• 1 GHz single-core processor

• 512 MB of RAM

• 4 GB of storage

• MicroSD card slot

• 0.3-megapixel front camera

• Android 4.0.3

World’s highest foreign currency reserves

China’s central bank has said it no longer sees any benefit in increasing its $3.66 trillion foreign currency reserves – already the world's largest. China will cap its purchases of US dollars in an effort to limit the depreciation of the yuan.

“It’s no longer in China’s favor to accumulate foreign-exchange reserves,” Bloomberg quoted Yi Gang, a deputy governor at the central bank as saying Tuesday.

Decreasing the influence of the dollar and other currencies is a step closer to reaching China’s 2015 goal to “float” its currency and according to the People’s Bank of China will help the everyday Chinese citizen.

Between July and September 2013 China’s increased its foreign – currency holdings by $166 billion, boosting it to the world’s highest of $3.66 trillion. This is also more that the Gross domestic product of Germany – the Europe’s biggest economy, Bloomberg reports.

This will “basically” end the interference of foreign currency in the Chinese market, and widen the yuan’s daily trading range.

The move also provides a buffer to China from future US Federal Reserve stimulus tapering, which, even just as it looms, has had severe ripple effects on emerging market currencies in Brazil and India.

Tuesday minutes from the Fed's policy meeting said it could start tapering its monthly $85 billion bonds purchases in the "coming months", if the job market improves further. Fed members also weighed the possibility of slowing the purchases even without clear evidence of a strengthening job market. The news sent Asian stocks lower on Thursday, Japan an exception.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.7 percent to 23,539.83 and China's Shanghai Composite decreased 1.1 percent to 2,183.50.

Once the yuan is set to free float, international transactions will be carried out in the Chinese currency, and it will become common in global trade, in league with the euro and dollar.

The Chinese yuan currently is the 13th most-used currency in the world for international payments.

Coldest place on Earth: Antarctica breaks world record 2013

Coldest place on Earth: Antarctica breaks world record 2013

East Antarctica has set a global record for soul-crushing cold, according to newly analysed data.

The remote region plunged as low as minus 94.7C (minus 135.8F) in August 2010, the Nasa satellite data revealed.

Then on July 31 this year, it came close again, at minus 92.9C (minus 135.3F). The old record was minus 89.2C (minus 128.6F).

Ice scientist Ted Scambos, at the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre, announced the cold facts at the American Geophysical Union scientific meeting in San Francisco.

"It's more like you'd see on Mars on a nice summer day in the poles," Mr Scambos said.

"I'm confident that these pockets are the coldest places on Earth."

However, it will not be in the Guinness Book of World Records because these were satellite-measured figures, not from thermometers, he added.

"Thank God, I don't know how exactly it feels," Mr Scambos said.

Most of the time researchers need to breathe through a snorkel that brings air into the coat through a sleeve and warms it up "so you don't inhale by accident" the cold air, Mr Scambos said.

Waleed Abdalati, an ice scientist at the University of Colorado and Nasa's former chief scientist, and Mr Scambos said this is likely to be an unusual random reading in a place that has not been measured much before and could have been colder or hotter in the past and we would not know.

Most Christmas lights on a residential property: Australian family breaks Guinness World Records'

An Australian family have put up 502,165 Christmas lights around their home, setting a new world record.

The Richards family, in Canberra, set the record for the most Christmas lights on a residential property, Guinness World Records confirmed.

The father, David Richards, told reporters he had started working on the display in October.

The family first held the world record in 2011, before losing the title to a family in New York.

The Richards family had put up 331,038 Christmas lights in 2011.

"I took a week off in [the] October school holidays and then have worked every weekend since," Mr Richards said.

"I have always loved Christmas. Having the Christmas lights with the community coming in and sharing it is a time when you get to know people you

probably should know better," he added.

He did not rule out doing this again in the future, but said he would need a generator to get any more electricity for his home, AP news agency reported.

The family say they will open the display to visitors in the coming weeks, to raise money for a children's charity.

(Though construction work on Mumbai India Tower began it has been put on hold since 2011. See comments below for more. So the Lodha World One Mumbai building is currently India’s Tallest Building Under Construction)

India Tower will be 700 meters or 2,300 feet tall and consist of 126 storey or floors according to Wikipedia. Compared to other tallest buildings in India today, India Tower is so tall it will really look like Gulliver standing among Lilliputians even in India’s Skyscraper City of Mumbai. That is because as of 2012 the tallest building of India are the two Imperial Towers in Mumbai. These Mumbai Imperial Tower I and II are only 254 meters or 833 feet tall. That means the new India Tower will be nearly 3 times the height of the current highest building in India!

Construction on India Tower began in 2010. To complete it is expected to take 6 years. It is developed by Dynamix Balwas (DB) Realtors as a mixed Hotel, Residential and Retail project. Upon completion the India tower will host the world famous Hyatt Hotel chains local Hotel in Mumbai with guest rooms, service apartments, exclusive banqueting and meeting facilities.

Because of this India Tower is also sometimes erroneously called as Park Hyatt Tower or Dynamix Balwas Tower, DB Tower.

No other completed buildings or under-construction buildings in India come even near as tall as this new India Tower. The nearest revel in India for the crown of India’s tallest Building is the World One skyscraper at Worli, Mumbai City. (The World One building is also under construction and planed to top off at 442 meters or 1,450 feet on completion in 2014)

Bryan Cranston stars in the hit drama, which has entered the 2014 record book. But highest-rated is not related to number of viewers, rather it is a measurement, given out by MetaCritic.com which ranked the show with a 99 out of 100. As a measure of comparison with other successful TV shows, Breaking Bad had 5.9 million total viewers, which was a record for the series, but a number that wasn’t even close to the numbers of viewers Duck Dynasty had at 11.8 million total viewers.

The series is entering its last stretch in anticipation of the series finale and has fans on the edge trying to figure out how the story will end up playing out. Breaking Bad has been around since 2008, and tells the story of Walter White (Cranston) who, after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, teams up with a former student to cook up the purest crystal meth to sell, in order provide for his family. The enormously successful series is at its half way point in the final season and according to some, running out of time with the flash-forwards. These suggest that Walter doesn’t end up untouched by all the things he’s done so far, as he walks by what used to be his house. However, there is no hint as to why his drug empire falls apart yet. So things need to happen.

Ahmad Amin Bodla - Martial artist sets world records in Saudi Arabia

Ahmad Amin Bodla - Tae Kwan Do black belt Martial artist sets world records in Saudi Arabia

Tae Kwan Do black belt Ahmad Amin Bodla, 21, broke two Guinness World Records on Wednesday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The first record was for “number of kicks in three minutes,” breaking Indian master Sidhu Kshetri’s world record of 620 kicks with 783 kicks with one leg.
Ahmad Amin Bodla

The second record was in the number of punches in one minute in the Wing Chun style of martial arts, breaking Australian master Mick Faber’s 301 punches with 313.

“I feel quite proud and happy that all this hard work has paid off,” said Bodla after breaking both records. There was a lot of pressure and a lot of hype, but despite all that, Alhamdulillah (thank God), I’ve broken the records,” he said.

Bodla, who hails from Pakistan, has studied in Riyadh’s King Saud University (KSU) and will be on his way to Pakistan next week.

The decision to break the records, Ahmad said, was an ode to the time he spent here among students and professors at KSU.

“It was my mission to create that memory here in Riyadh, because I’ve spent a good time here and when I look back, I want to look back at this moment,” he said.

Bodla currently holds 18 Guinness World Records in various martial arts categories, including most full-contact Wing Chun-style punching strikes in two minutes, with 1,204 strikes, and fastest time to strike 100 martial arts punches, coming in at 7.66 seconds.

The results of Wednesday’s attempts were reviewed by a panel of judges present at the event, held at a Fitness First, who confirmed Bodla’s record, while the video footage will be sent to the Guinness World Records to officially tally the results and publish them within the next two months.

Ahmad’s father, Zia Ullah Anjum Bodla, was present at the event, cheering his son on along with friends and family members.

“I’m humbled and I bow my head before Allah Almighty because without his blessing and kindness, no achievement can ever be made,” he said.

Bodla first became interested in martial arts when he was 17, as his father recalls: “I was deployed operationally in a far-flung area near Lahore, and Ahmad met an army soldier who was an expert black belt in martial arts. From him, he was inspired to follow this path.”

Bodla’s journey through martial arts was challenged by a childhood struggle with asthma, his father said: “Incidentally, Ahmad was very slim and weak and I never thought he would become so strong, but because of his personal dedication and zest, Masha’a Allah, he has been able to achieve this standard.”

On entering the demonstrative and performance side of martial arts, Bodla said: “Five years ago, I started training as a beginner, when I was 17 years old.
