Cuban - World's biggest bike set World Records by Felix Guirola

A Cuban cyclist is bidding to have his 'record' of having ridden the world's largest bike recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Felix Guirola, a former welder, has been riding his 18ft-high bicycle through the narrow streets of Old Havana for several years.

Now he hopes his efforts will be recognised officially by the Guinness Book of World Records.

With his home-made contraption, he dodges low-hanging electricity cables, potholes and pedestrians on a daily-basis.

To mount or descend from his enormous bike he needs help from three people to hold the metal steady while he clamours down.

"I've never been much of a cyclist, but I really like riding tall bikes," Mr Guirola told the AFP newswire. "I don't know if this interests Cubans, but it interests me. This is my hobby."

The current record-holder in the tall-bike stakes is Canadian Terry Goertzen, who achieved the title in 2004. However, Mr Guirola is confident he will beat the Canadian with his high-altitude device, claiming that even as Mr Goertzen was claiming his record, he was already pedaling the world's tallest bike – he just never knew he had to register the feat with officials at Guinness.

Mr Guirola has now rectified the mistake and notified the organization.

A vendor of small household items by day, and a renowned tinkerer in his spare time, Mr Guirola crafted his first bike – one that was 6.5ft-high – in 1983.

He thought he might use it in some way to raise money to help his disabled sister, who died in 1994.

Since then, his bicycles have grown in scale. He now plans to go even bigger, constructing one that will soar to 39 feet.

"I say sometimes it's like an obsession," his wife, Francisca Acosta, said. "It is always about bicycles and each passing day it gets a little bit taller."

Every day he drops her off with his tall bike at the restaurant where she works – an unusual commute, but one she has grown accustomed to over the years.
