Most Live Concerts in 24 hours set Guinness World Record by MTV

MTV and Viacom Music Group’s event O Music Awards is back in its third year, with an aim to break the Guinness World Record for ‘Most Live Concerts’ in 24 hours.

The awards show will stage a road trip from Memphis across eight cities to New Orleans. Live cameras will follow the nominated band from the tour bus to the stage as they attempt to break the Guinness World Record. The record currently belongs to rapper Jay-Z.

Fans can nominate their favourite band to participate in the tour, the winning band and list of nominees and performers will be revealed on 23 May. The show will launch on 27 June.

Viacom Music Logo Group executive vice-president Dermot McCormack said, “We started O Music Awards as an experiment and it keeps gaining momentum as an incubator for experimenting with interactive storytelling across multiple platforms. We invite the audience and together we want to push the boundaries of how stories are told. We also have some fun, giving out awards and breaking a few records.”

Last year, rapper Chiddy Bang broke two Guinness World Records after rapping for 9 hours, 16 minutes at the Awards. Bang bagged the record for longest freestyle rap and longest marathon rapping.

Past winners include Björk (Digital Genius Award), Kanye West (Best Tweet), Nirvana (Best Vintage Viral Video), Spotify (Most Addictive Social Music Service) and Way Out West (Most Innovative Festival).

World's longest Koran - Iraqi aims to write The oldest Quran in the world

World's longest Koran - Iraqi aims to write The oldest Quran in the world

Hussein al-Kharsan kneels, bent over a giant sheet of paper, laboriously writing the words of Islam’s holy book, the Koran, in beautiful Arabic script with a traditional wood and feather pen.

The 25-year-old Iraqi aims to take an unusual path to fame: writing the longest copy of the Koran in the world. Kharsan says the scroll is to be between 5,500 and 6,000 metres long, or 3.4 and 3.7 miles.

His aim, he says, is to set a Guinness World Record.

If that happens, it will be another entry on the Islamic holy text, which expressly prohibits the consumption of alcohol, in a record book conceived by the managing director of a brewery.

The copy of the Koran was supposed to be shown this year, when Najaf was to be the Islamic Capital of Culture, but that project has been postponed indefinitely amid serial delays and allegations of corruption.

It has not however stopped Kharsan, who graduated from Baghdad University’s college of fine arts, from continuing his work inside a religious school in Najaf, despite pains in his neck and back from long hours of carefully writing out one verse after another.

“At the beginning, the agreement was to finish the work in six months, on the basis of writing three pages out of 503 pages of the Koran every day,” Kharsan said.

“I succeeded at the beginning and worked for 16 hours a day for more than two weeks until I started suffering pains,” he said.

“The doctor asked me to stop working for about a month but I refused and told him that I work with the blessings of the Koran. Now I take pain-killing pills and work for five hours a day, which means I need about a year to finish.”

Kharsan, who began participating in Arabic calligraphy competitions when he was just nine years old, writes on four pieces of white paper that are each 1,500 metres long.

‘Leave my mark’

He has succeeded in copying 13 pages of the Koran since he started his work about a month ago. Arabic calligraphy is one of the most prominent forms of Arab and Islamic art.

“We are the people of Arabic calligraphy,” said Sheikh Ali Merza, the principal of the school where Kharsan is working on the Koran.

“Kufi calligraphy (named after Najaf’s twin city of Kufa) is well known, and when we want to do calligraphy, it is not something new for us because we practised this kind of art historically,” Merza said.

He added that Kharsan’s work will be displayed in Najaf, even if the Capital of Islamic Culture project does not go ahead.

Guinness World Records does not have any entries for the longest Koran, but the largest printed copy measures two metres (6.5 feet) high and 1.52 metres (4 feet, 11 inches) wide, and was unveiled in Russia last November.

The smallest copy, printed in Cairo in 1982 and owned by a Pakistani man, is 1.7 by 1.3 centimetres (0.66 by 0.5 of an inch), but still 571 pages long.

The biggest book in the world, meanwhile, measures five by 8.06 metres (16.4 by 26.44 feet) and weighs some 1,500 kilogrammes (3,306 pounds). It is on the life and achievements of the Prophet Mohammed, and was unveiled in Dubai in February.

Goldwire Mclendon - World’s oldest recording artist

Goldwire Mclendon - World’s oldest recording artist

ELDER GOLDWIRE Mclendon could be a contender for the Guiness Book of World Records. Yet he already considers himself blessed.

“I’m highly favored, more than a conquerer through Christ,” testified the Mount Olive Holy Temple church elder in a recent chat. “But if they want to put me in the book,” he added with a chuckle, “I’m all for it.”

For his great and abiding gospel vocal abilities, still enthralling at the tender age of 81, Mclendon has already earned much earthly praise.

In 2009, he was honored as a Philadelphia “Living Legend” in a local awards ceremony alongside Chubby Checker, Dee Dee Sharp and Billy Paul. A year later, he almost made to the mountaintop in TV land — as first runner-up on Season 3 of the BET gospel -singing competition “Sunday Best.” And April 24 he released “The Best of Elder Goldwire Mclendon,” a seven-track mashup of traditional and contemporary gospel material for Music World Records — a release that has led the label, a pet project of Matthew Knowles, to proclaim Mclendon “the oldest American contemporary solo artist signed to a record deal.” How about that?

Among the album selections are renderings of “How Great Thou Art,” “The Battle is the Lord’s” and “Oh, Happy Day” — songs that elicited many a “hallelujah” and tears of joy from celebrity judges and millions of votes in the final stanzas of the 12-week “Sunday Best” competition.

And talk about life changing. Ever since this TV triumph, Mclendon said, he’d been “much in demand for singing appearances” and “enjoying a new lease on life,” riding in limos and airplanes to perform and meet his admirers.

Still new to this celebrity thing, the experience of confronting a whipped-up group of fans really freaked the man out first time it happened in Cincinnati, Mclendon recalled last week.

“We were in a large venue, and when we came into the lobby, I looked at the other end, where they had opened the door, and the women were running toward me,” he said. “They wanted to hug me, they want my picture, they wanted my autograph. Oh, it was an awesome experience.” (Maybe there’s another Guiness citation in there for him too: American’s oldest gospel stud?)

“He has the energy and enthusiam of a young man,” said Music World CEO Knowles, an industry pro known best as father of Beyonce Knowles and mentor to Destiny’s Child. “As I watched him in Season 3, he competed with vigor and stamina. He proved that he can connect with people in a wide range of demographics as he won the hearts of over a million supporters — especially women.”

Spiritual singing has long been central to Mclendon’s life, since his childhood in Jacksonville, Fla. His aunt Anna, blessed with a voice “like Mahalia Jackson,” took him first to the Mount Airy Baptist Church, then to the Church of God, where he began to sing solos before he’d even hit double digits. By the time he was 16, Mclendon had organized the Cosmopolitian Gospel Singers of Jacksonville.

He moved to Philadelphia to live with his mother and find work, first at a restaurant, then at the Campbell’s soup factory and later as a ship welder.
