South Africans set world record by singing for Former president Nelson Mandela

Johannesburg - A planned attempt to break a world record, with over 20 million people singing "happy birthday" to former president Nelson Mandela, was announced on Tuesday.

"This year we hope to break the Guinness Book of World Records with more than 20 million South Africans singing," Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga and Lead SA said in a statement.

"We want to encourage the nation to join in."

Last year the department and the civic participation group arranged for millions of schoolchildren to sing to Mandela at 08:00 on his birthday.

Lead SA spokesperson Yusuf Abramjee said he was confident that the public would show their love and affection for Mandela by participating in singing to him on his 94th birthday on Wednesday 18 July.

"In addition to the millions of schoolchildren, we want people in offices, in factories and those out on the streets to join in..."

The SHOUT Foundation, a movement aimed at reducing crime, committed 94 singers to record the song for distribution in the run-up to Mandela's birthday.

Irish girl youngest at North Pole - Youngest person at the North Pole

Irish girl youngest at North Pole - Youngest person at the North Pole

An Irish endurance runner who travelled the globe running seven marathons in five days has secured another record − his daughter has become the youngest person at the North Pole.

Jaimie Donovan, daughter of Galway marathon runner Richard Donovan, braved Arctic temperatures of -26 degrees to accompany her father to the top of the world on Easter Sunday.

The duo flew to the pole to mark the 10th anniversary of the annual North Pole Marathon which Mr Donovan organises.

The youngster broke the record, previously set by the daughter of British adventurer David Hempleman-Adams in 1998, by just one day.

“It was cold and the helicopter was noisy,” Jaimie said. “I loved the North Pole and I want to go back.”

Jaimie and her teddy bear were standing on the ice at 5.30am on Easter day.

Mr Donovan, who earlier this year set a new record of seven marathons on seven continents in less than five days, said his daughter took the experience in her stride.

“I decided to bring Jaimie and my wife Caroline this year as it was the 10th year of the race and they were long overdue a trip to see what I’ve been working hard to achieve for the last decade. It was a simple coincidence that she seems to be the youngest to stand up there. I was just proud of her very good behaviour and the fact she took the trip in her stride at her age, embracing the adventure.”

According to Guinness World Records, Alicia Hempleman-Adams, born on November 8th 1989, stood at the geographic North Pole aged eight years and 173 days on May 1st, 1998. She had also flown to the pole to meet her father. Mr Donovan’s daughter, born on October 17th 2003, beat the record by one day. The Donovan family will have to apply to Guinness World Records to have the feat verified.

This year’s course had to be patrolled by armed personnel as two polar bears were spotted in the area.

The marathon began on Friday at 9pm with 41 athletes from 18 countries running in -26 degrees across small pressure ridges, ice and snow. The winner was Andrew Murray from Scotland in a time of 4:17:08, while Demelza Farr of Australia won the women’s title in 6:06:36.

Highest number of tattoos on his body set world record by Delhi man

Highest number of tattoos on his body set world record by Delhi man

Guinness Rishi, 70, from Delhi, is covered in the flags of 305 different countries, 185 country maps, 165 mini flags and 2,985 characters.

His wife, Bimla, finally persuaded him to stop after convincing Guinness that no one else would want to break his world record - which officially stands at his 2009 total of 220 flag tattoos.

'I've beaten my own record and will invite the adjudicators to come update their books, so that my new total is recognised through the years,' said Guinness, who changed his name from Har Prakash when he set out to break as many world records as possible five years ago.

His 22 records include such singular feats as making the longest will in the world - a whopping 489 pages, delivering a pizza from New Delhi to San Francisco, and, of course, carrying the highest number of tattoos on his body.

Rishi's other records include 'taking on the world's oldest adoptee', after he legally took custody of his 61-year-old brother-in-law, and building the tallest sugar cube tower in the world, which stood at 64 inches.

Incredibly, the committed record-breaker also had all his teeth extracted so he could fill his mouth with 750 straws.

To win support for his bid to preserve his body on public display Guinness even has a tattoo on his forehead bearing the legend, Ripley's Believe It Or Not.

And it seems his days of getting inked may not be completely over - Guinness simply confirms he has enough flags on his body.

His commitment to breaking records means he might find it hard to resist having the most tattoo artists working on him at the same time.

'The record is held by an American who in 1996 had 22 artists work on him,' he says. 'As a matter of fact, I did break the record in Pattaya last year when 25 artists etched 55 flags on me. But I was not familiar with the rules and forgot to make a video recording.'

While his forehead, head, arms, legs and chest are covered with tattoos, his back remains pristine clear.

'I am saving that for a dream project,' said Guinness. 'It's going to be the hall of fame for world record holding tattoo artists. I will have all their names and achievements tattooed on my back.'

"People call me a joker, a madman. It doesn't bother me. My dream is to go around the world several times. I want the children of those countries to ask me, where the flag of their country is, spot it and then, in the process, become aware of my country and other countries as well," said Rishi.

"In fact, I am donating my body to the Ripley's Believe It Or Not museum, so that they preserve it and put in on display," he revealed.

Guinness's wife Bimla is so angered by her husband's attention-seeking that she refuses to go to the market or be seen in public with him.
