The Kulkarnis, stand out wherever they go, as they are the country's tallest family. They are now hoping to set a new world record with their combined height. Sharad Kulkarni, 52, stands at 7ft 1.5-inch tall and his wife Sanjot, 46, is 6ft 2.6-inches tall. Their daughters, 22-year-old Mruga and 16-year-old Sanya, are 6ft 1inch and 6ft 4inches respectively. The four-member family's combined height is a staggering 26ft.

The couple was crowned India's tallest couple by Limca Book of Records after they married in 1989. They had hoped to be named the world's tallest couple by the Guinness Book of Records, until it emerged that Wayne and Laurie Hallquist, from Stockton, California, stand a combined inch taller at 13ft 4 inches.

"We were a little disheartened. It's nice to have recognition when you live your life being so different. It ends up meaning something. But we're excited about new prospects," Sharad said. Growing up, Kulkarnis faced years of teasing and ridicule. When Kulkarni hit 7ft as a teenager, he ploughed his energies into sports and ended up playing basketball for his country, but Sanjot struggled to go unrecognised and fit in the remote Indian village where she lived.

The pair began to accept early on in their teens that marriage one day might be difficult. "It's hard for a woman to be taller than a man in India. The man has the more authoritative role so I would never want to marry a smaller man and then be ridiculed about his wife," Sanjot said.

"It was a big possibility that I'd never marry really," she said. But Sanjot's grandmother spotted Kulkarni walking down a street in Mumbai one evening and approached him. A few weeks later Kulkarni's parents called the number and a meeting was arranged for the potential couple. The couple married in December 1988. Now, along with their two grown-up daughters Mruga and Sanya, they hope to have the chance to be the world's tallest family.

Golf ball caught in a moving car set Guinness World Record by David Coulthard

Golf ball caught in a moving car set Guinness World Record by David Coulthard

This is the remarkable moment David Coulthard caught a golf ball in his car while travelling at 120mph.

The F1 star set one of the more unusual world records with the help of separate piece of skillful driving - from Jake Shepherd.

The ball was launched off the tee by the pro golfer, and travelled around 300yds before dropping into the vehicle as the F1 driver skillfully tracked its flight and manoeuvred the £200,000 Mercedes-Benz sports car underneath it.

At right around 120 mph it was time for former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard to stick his hand out of his $200,000 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster supercar to make the catch. In his hand (nearly) plopped a standard sized golf ball hit by British pro golfer Jake Shepherd from 275 meters away. As it turns out, catching the ball in your hand isn’t one of the requirements for the Guinness World Record to be won – and good thing, too, as they actually ended up catching the ball here in the middle of the car’s front two seats.

The video which shows the feat is quickly becoming a smash hit of its own, as seeing this massively expensive car capture a ball whose take-off speed was 178 mph down an airport runway is no one-time view. Have a peek at this action right this instant:

Human tower built in New York set world records by Castellers de Vilafranca team

The Castellers de Vilafranca team build a human tower, or castell, on a skysraper roof in Manhatten as part of a bid to set a new world record.

The 150-strong Castellers de Vilafranca team took about five minutes to get into position.

Cheers erupted when the final child, wearing a safety helmet, topped the precarious human tower.

Earlier, the team had built an eight-person high human tower, apparently setting a new Guinness World Record.

The performance is the first in a series of events being held to celebrate the rebuilding of the World Trade Center complex that was destroyed by terrorists in 2001.

Highest ever wingsuit jump set Guinness World Record by Jhonathan Florez

Highest ever wing suit jump set Guinness World Record by Jhonathan Florez

Colombian born stuntman notches longest, furthest, highest and ever wing suit jump

Breath-taking footage shows the moment a daredevil smashed four world records in one death defying jump.

Fearless Jhonathan Florez, 29, leapt from 37,265ft then flew like a bird reaching speeds of up to 100mph using a wing suit.

Jhonathan's high altitude stunt smashed the record for the longest ever wing suit jump, clocking in at nine minutes and six seconds.

The Colombian born stuntman also claimed the record for greatest horizontal distance flown in a wing suit, covering 16.315 miles as he battled through temperatures of -45C.

Jhonathan also bagged the record for the greatest absolute distance flown in a wing suit of 17.520 miles and the highest ever wingsuit jump.

He admitted he planned to take a break from his daredevil stunts - because they terrify his wife.

Jhonathan, who lives in Florida with wife Caci, 28, said: 'My wife is not to keen on me doing them. She is understandably worried while I am up there.

'It can be a bit of a dangerous sport - but it gives you a great sense of achievement.'

The professional film maker and photographer captured the dangerous stunt using cameras attached to his back and helmet.

He spent months training for his record breaking flight and had to wear oxygen masks to breath as he started so high up.

He rounded off the jump, having descended 33,000ft, by eventually pulling his parachute at just 4,000ft above the ground.

Jhonathan, who completed the jump in Colombia on April 20, said: 'It was just an amazing feeling when I completed the jump. It was the best moment of my life.

World’s most expensive pizza - Vancouver’s Stevenston Pizza Company’s pizza

World’s most expensive pizza - Vancouver’s Stevenston Pizza Company’s pizza

It’s also good news for owner and founder Nader Hatami, whose humble pizza parlour—three of them, actually, in Vancouver, South Surrey and a flagship in historic Richmond—usurped the most expensive pizza title from grumpy celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey, whose 2005 white truffle pizza sold in London for just 100 pounds sterling—a bargain!

“We’ve always had a section on the menu that was outside the box,” says Hatami, adding his fare—which includes affordable $14 pizzas too—is always evolving and updated every season. A couple of months ago, inspired by his good old days of working on cruise ships, Hatami added the “C6” to his menu. It’s $450 a pop and requires a full day’s notice to make.

What does a pizza that retails as much as a dishwasher deliver? Officially, it’s thermidor of lobster with black Alaska cod served with a side of Russian caviar. Like all of Hatami’s pizzas, however, it’s really about flavour interplay. “You have to create harmony between the ingredients of any pizza,” he says. “This has the richness of lobster with the saltiness of caviar, all brought together with smoked salmon.”

And while the C6 is hardly a light pizza—“it’s only 12 inches with 10 slices, but easily feeds five because it’s so rich,” he explains—fresh organic ingredients leave you feeling satisfied but not stuffed. “For me, to classify something as good, it has to taste good and feel great,” says Hatami. “You don’t want to eat something and immediately need a nap.”

So if eating an extra-large deep-dish pizza and passing out in front of a flat-screen is your idea of quality takeout, the C6 may not be for you. “It’s not the kind of pizza you’d have on a Friday night while watching the football game,” he says.

Fancy pizza, even before the hefty bill arrives, is a much harder sell. “One of my employees said I was crazy, but you know what? People spend $1,000 on fermented grape juice all the time. That’s my reasoning.”

If Hatami’s crazy, he’s not the only one. Super-expensive luxury foods regularly make forward-friendly Internet slideshows—$5,000 Kobe beef burgers, $200 club sandwiches with quail eggs, and a $1.6 million Japanese fruitcake—encrusted with 223 small diamonds—all made recent headlines.

Nik Wallenda set world record for tightrope walk across Niagara Falls

Nik Wallenda set world record for tightrope walk across Niagara Falls

NIAGARA FALLS, — When Nik Wallenda sets out for his tightrope walk over Niagara Falls late Friday, he’ll be adding another chapter to his family’s storied daredevil history which dates back more than two centuries. Wallenda has said he is disappointed he is being made to wear a tether by the event’s sponsor, ABC, since his family has performed over the years without such safety precautions.

All signs are pointing to "go" for Nik Wallenda's dramatic attempt tonight to become the first person to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope.

Crowds are beginning to gather for a good viewing spot for the spectacle. The Niagara Parks Commission estimates that the Canadian side of the Falls could be jammed with 120,000 people by the time the slow-moving action gets underway.

Wallenda told CTV this morning that he's ready for the historic walk and feels like "a kid on Christmas morning."

If he's successful, Wallenda would become the first tightrope walker to do his thing over the base of the Falls. Several others have crossed over the Niagara Gorge just downstream from the Falls more than a century ago.

In the last few days, the 33-year-old daredevil has been practising his craft and overseeing the installation of a five-centimetre-wide steel wire cable that has been strung 60 metres above the churning waters.

Tonight's weather forecast for Niagara Falls calls for clear skies and a temperature of around 20 C at the scheduled walk time. But since he'll be so close to the plunging waters, he'll likely have to deal with misty conditions.

Wallenda, who hails from a long line of high-wire artists, will begin his 500-metre-long stroll from the American side shortly after 10 p.m. ET tonight.

World’s longest kayak set Guinness World Records by US company

World’s longest kayak set Guinness World Records by US company

A US company is hoping to get into the Guinness Book of Records after creating a kayak more than 400ft long.

LL Bean built the impressive 407ft 7ins long vessel - made out of 100 standard kayaks - to celebrate the firm’s centenary. And, after six months of planning, 100 employees took to the kayak for its maiden voyage on a lake in Freeport, Maine. The team managed to paddle away from the jetty and make a successful tour around the stretch of water.

The outdoor gear firm have now submitted their notary-certified application to the Guinness World Records for consideration. Company spokesman Scot Balentine said: “It was pretty incredible to look down the boat, you could tell people had a smile on their face. “Then, when we started to paddle, it was amazing to watch the whole thing go. You could tell they really leaned into it as the boat really took off from the dock.”

Top ten boxers 2012 - The Best Boxers In the World 2012

Top ten boxers 2012 - The Best Boxers In the World 2012

Even though it seems that they will never face each other, everyone is still wondering if and when Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will take place. Then again, some may ask if anyone will ever defeat Wladimir Klitschko. Will Juan Manuel Marquez ever get the decision over Manny Pacquiao? Will James Kirkland ever hold a world title? Will Julio Cesar Chavez Junior ever defeat someone as impressive as Sergio Martinez?
Top ten boxers 2012, The Best Boxers 2012, top ten heavyweight boxers 2012, top 10 boxer in the world, Greatest Boxers Of All Time, The Best Boxers In The World, The Top 10 Middleweight Boxers in the World, 10 most best boxers of the world, top 10 boxers in the world today, top 10 richest boxers in the world

That is the beauty of boxing. Opportunities will arise, and titles will surely change hands.

So where are we at now? Who are currently the best boxers in each division?
Below, I give you today’s best boxers in every weight division beginning with the best heavyweight all the way down to the best strawweight. Plus, our list is concluded with today’s pound-for-pound king.

HEAVYWEIGHT (UNLIMITED)
Wladimir Klitschko -
IBF, WBA, WBO and Ring Magazine Champion:

The only other heavyweight who may be as good as Wladimir Klitschko is his brother Vitali Klitschko (WBC). Together, they have mostly cleaned out the heavyweight division. A champion since 2006, Wladimir continues to defeat every opponent placed in front of him.

CRUISERWEIGHT (200 POUNDS)
Yoan Pablo Hernandez -
IBF Champion:

Hernandez finally dethroned Steve Cunningham last October to snatch the IBF title. How Hernandez matches up against the other champions, Krzysztof Wlodarczyk (WBC), Guillermo Jones (WBA), and Marco Huck (WBO), remains to be seen. Then again, if Hernandez can defeat Cunningham twice, then it’s fair to say that he can beat anyone.

LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT (175 POUNDS)
Chad Dawson -
WBC Champion:

Upon his defeat of Bernard Hopkins, Dawson took the throne of the 175-pound division. Although his next fight will be against 168-pound king Andre Ward, few will argue that Dawson is the man to beat in the light heavyweight division in comparison to Tavoris Cloud (IBF), Beibut Shumenov (WBA), and Nathan Cleverly (WBO).

SUPER MIDDLEWEIGHT (168 POUNDS)

Andre Ward -
WBC/WBA Champion:

With wins over names such as Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch, Ward is undoubtedly in a class of his own. It was unfortunate that he decided not to face another popular champ in Lucian Bute, but now that Bute has lost to Carl Froch (IBF), perhaps Ward knew more than most of us after all. Another champ is Robert Stieglitz (WBO), but he’ll have plenty on his plate in the form of Arthur Abraham.

MIDDLEWEIGHT (160 POUNDS)
Sergio Martinez -
The Ring Magazine Champion:

Upon his victory over Kelly Pavlik in 2010, Martinez became the world’s best middleweight. This was confirmed as Martinez knocked out Paul Williams in the second round of their rematch later that year. Martinez continues to defeat each opponent, and despite being stripped of his WBC belt, Martinez is clearly the best 160-pounder in the world. Other top names in the middleweight division are Julio Cesar Chavez Junior (WBC), Felix Sturm (WBA), Daniel Geale (IBF), and Dimitry Pirog (WBO). Gennady Golovkin is making a splash as well.

JR. MIDDLEWEIGHT (154 POUNDS)

Floyd Mayweather Junior -
(WBA Champion):

It remains to be seen if Mayweather plans on defending the belt that he won from beating Miguel Cotto, or if he will return to welterweight, if he even returns to the ring. The other champs in the division include Saul Alvarez (WBC), Cornelius Bundrage (IBF), and Zaurbek Baysangurov (WBO).

WELTERWEIGHT (147 POUNDS)
Manny Pacquiao -
WBO Champion:

Even though Pacquiao failed to look impressive with his controversial win over Juan Manuel Marquez last November, Pacquiao is still one of today’s best boxers if not The Best. There is only one name that fans wish to see Pacquiao face, and that is obviously Floyd Mayweather Junior (WBC). Other top names in the division include Paulie Malignaggi (WBA) and Mike Jones.

JR. WELTERWEIGHT (140 POUNDS)
Timothy Bradley -
WBO Champion:

With wins over names such as Lamont Peterson and Devon Alexander, Bradley has proven to be the best in the division. He received massive criticism for failing to meet Amir Khan in the ring, but since Khan lost to Peterson (WBA/IBF), Bradley is looking just as good as we all thought he was. Other top names include Danny Garcia (WBC) and Juan Manuel Marquez.

LIGHTWEIGHT (135 POUNDS)

Miguel Vazquez -
IBF Champion:

In a division without Juan Manuel Marquez and Brandon Rios, Miguel Vazquez is basically the best 135-pounder by default. He won his title in 2010, and he has made three successful title defenses. If anyone wants to prove that they he is the best, then this is the man to beat. Other top lightweights include Antonio DeMarco (WBC) and Ricky Burns (WBO).

JR. LIGHTWEIGHT (130 POUNDS)
Takashi Uchiyama -
WBA Champion:

Victories over Juan Salgado and Jorge Solis provide evidence of this Japanese boxer’s potential. With four defenses under his belt, the knockouts continue to pile up. Unfortunately, it does not appear that he will be facing the fastest rising star in the division, Adrian Broner (WBO). If Broner continues to look impressive, then most folks will argue that he is the man to neat in the the 130-pound division, unless Broner moves up in weight of course. The other champions consist of Takahiro Aoh (WBC) and Juan Carlos Salgado (IBF).

FEATHERWEIGHT (126 POUNDS)
Chris John -
WBA Champion:

Even with names like Yuriorkis Gamboa and Orlando Salido (WBO) attempting to become the best featherweight in the world, Chris John is still the man to beat. John has been full champion since 2004 and has defeated everyone he has ever faced including Rocky Juarez and even Juan Manuel Marquez. Besides Gamboa and Salido, other top names include Jhonny Gonzalez (WBC), Billy Dib (IBF), Celestino Caballero (WBA “interim”) and Mikey Garcia.

JR. FEATHERWEIGHT (122 POUNDS)

Nonito Donaire -
WBO Champion:

As one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best, it is assumed that Donaire is the best at 122 pounds. He has yet to face a name such as the division’s WBC or WBA champ, but at least it appears that he will be facing the IBF champ (the least popular of the titleholders). Other top names include Abner Mares (WBC), Guillermo Rigondeaux (WBA), Jeffrey Mathebula (IBF), and Toshiaki Nishioka.

BANTAMWEIGHT (118 POUNDS)

Anselmo Moreno -
WBA champion

Now that Nonito Donaire and Abner Mares have moved up to 122 pounds, Moreno has claimed the throne of the 118-pound division. A champion since 2008, Moreno is looking unstoppable at this point. Other top names include Shinsuke Yamanaka (WBC), Jorge Arce (WBO), and Leo Santa Cruz (IBF).

JR. BANTAMWEIGHT (115 POUNDS)

Omar Andres Narvaez -
WBO Champion:

Despite a recent loss to Nonito Donire, Narvaez has shown time and time again that he can compete with the best in boxing, especially at junior bantamweight as well as flyweight, where he previously held a championship belt. He already has four  successful title defenses at 115 on his resume, and he is ready to move forward. Other top jr. bantamweights are Yota Sato (WBC), Tepparith Singwancha (WBA), and Juan Carlos Sanchez (IBF).

FLYWEIGHT (112 POUNDS)

Brian Viloria -
WBO Champion:

This former two-time junior flyweight champion is now claiming the flyweight division. With wins over Giovani Segura, Julio Miranda, and now that Wonjongkam has been defeated, Viloria is the division’s best. Other top names include Hernan Marquez (WBA), Moruti Mthalene (IBF), and Sonny Boy Jaro (WBC).

JR. FLYWEIGHT (108 POUNDS)

Roman Gonzalez -
WBA Champion:

Still undefeated, this former strawweight champion continues to score knockouts as the junior flyweight champion. Other top names include Kompayak Porpramook (WBC), Ulises Solis (IBF), and Donnie Nietes (WBO).

STRAWWEIGHTS (105 POUNDS)

Nkosinathi Joyi -
IBF Champion:

As strawweight champion, Joyi remains undefeated in 22 bouts, and he seeks a worthy challenger. Other top names include Kuzuto Ioka (WBC), Akira Yaegashi (WBA), and Moisés Fuentes (WBO).

POUND-4-POUND #1
Floyd Mayweather Jr. -
WBC Welterweight Champion:
WBA Super Welterweight Champion:

If the end of 2011 was any indication, we all know that Pacquiao struggled yet again with Juan Manuel Marquez, a fighter who Mayweather beat in a one-sided bout back in 2009. Also, Mayweather won his fight over Victor Ortiz by a questionable knockout, but still a knockout nonetheless in a bout that Mayweather was clearly winning anyway. Also, Mayweather defeated Miguel Cotto to win the WBA super welterweight title. What does this all mean? Well, if Mayweather was a favorite to beat Pacquiao before, he certainly is now more than ever.

Most ambitious tour ever - The Melvins' Buzz Osborne Tour Dates

Most ambitious tour ever - The Melvins' Buzz Osborne Tour Dates

Seminal grunge rockers The Melvins have been playing music for 29 years, and founding member and frontman Buzz Osborne is pushing 50. That isn’t stopping them from embarking on one of the most ambitious tours one can imagine. In fact, when they hit the road this fall, they’ll be going after the world record for the most ambitious tour ever, at least in the United States. Beginning with a Sept. 5 show in Anchorage, Alaska, the Melvins will attempt to play 51 shows in 51 days, with each show taking place in a different state and one in Washington D.C.

“I honestly don’t think it’s going to be that hard,” said Osborne. “But we have to do it, that’s the thing. It’s a lot of shows in a row. It’s a lot of people to count on. We’re not getting any younger. You’ve got to do this stuff while you can still put one foot in front of the other.”
Buzz Osborne latest news, Buzz Osborne music videos, Buzz Osborne pictures, Buzz Osborne tour dates, Most ambitious tour ever, Buzz Osborne world records, 2012 Buzz Osborne tour dates

After an initial claim that The Melvins would attempt the entire tour on Harleys, Osborne admitted that they would indeed be traveling by van, with the exception of the dates in Alaska and Hawaii.

“We’re driving,” Osborne said. “It’d be easy for Morrissey to get in his private jet and do it. If that was the case we would do four states a day.”

The tour will be part of a busy year for the Melvins. On Tuesday, they released Freak Puke, an album recorded by a variation of the group called Melvins Lite that consists of Osborne, long-standing drummer Dale Crover, and upright bassist Trevor Dunn. The album is a departure from what most have come to expect from the Melvins, relying heavily on an experimental, free-flowing, jazz-like sound that comes largely as a result of Dunn’s prowess on the upright bass. “The only strings on the record are the stand-up bass,” said Osborne. “Technically they’re strings, but he got all of those string [sounds] out of a stand-up double bass. There’s no amp, just a mic-ed, acoustic, stand up double bass. Trevor’s amazing. He’s a tremendous musician.”

World's fastest omelette Maker - Howard Helmer's Recipes and Tips

World's fastest omelette Maker - Howard Helmer's Recipes and Tips

Watching Howard Helmer cook an omelette, you can't help but smile. The American egg evangelist is so passionate about the humble egg and the culinary possibilities it represents it's contagious.

"My job is to take away any trepidation people might feel about cooking eggs and make it as simple as possible which is easy... because as easy as it looks is as easy as it gets."

Helmer, who was in the country this week courtesy of the Australian Egg Corporation, discovered his speedy way with eggs back in the early 1980s.

"It was 1982 and back in 1982 everyone was looking for their Andy Warhol-style 15 minutes of fame. The way to do that was to get in the Guinness Book of Records... you know there were people cramming into Volkswagens and all sorts of things... I was working for the American Egg Board, so it made sense."

"It was also the year Teflon was introduced so that gave me a technological advantage," he says with his trademark cheeky grin.

But Helmer's 15 minutes of fame is now approaching 30 years. He not only holds the record for the number of two-egg omelettes made in 30 minutes but has broken the Guinness World Record for omelette flipping. He is also able to make one omelette in less than 40 seconds.

Helmer can whip up one omelette in less than 40 seconds and has done 427 two-egg record-breaking omelettes in 30 minutes.

"It's all about preparation," he says. He also holds a record for egg flipping and was in Perth last week doing demonstrations for the Australian Egg Corporation.

Next month he's off to Denmark and he goes twice a year to Japan, the world's biggest consumer of eggs.

Australians are eating 7 per cent more eggs than in 2010 - up from 198 per person each year to 213.

"We believe the increased consumption is due to a growing awareness of new science that proves that eggs do not increase cholesterol as previously thought and that people can safely eat six eggs a week (according to the Heart Foundation)," Australian Egg Corporation managing director James Kellaway says.

"Not only that, new science shows that egg consumption can help people with diabetes and assist reduced obesity in the community."

They're "soul food" for Helmer, an exuberant first-generation American with a spontaneous smile. He grew up in a Russian-Jewish ghetto in Chicago, where a meal cooked one day would be stretched with eggs the next to make leftovers last.

A job copywriting about eggs for the American Egg Board took him to New York, then the board's restaurant in Disneyland, where he set his first world record in 1982 - and it changed his life.

At 74, he's just retired but is still whisking up omelettes galore.

"I've been practically everywhere except France," he says.

"It's like the French think of me as some upstart American contaminating their conception of what an omelette should be."

Instead of a 20cm pan, he uses a 26cm pan - non-stick for an optimal result - and does a ladle (half a cup) of egg mix at a time.

The bigger pan means there is more cooking surface, so the omelette cooks faster and looks bigger - always a plus. And here's his key to success: for each egg, add a tablespoon of water. "Not milk," he says.

"With milk, the protein fibres toughen and make the eggs leathery."

Keep the pan on medium-high and use only butter or margarine because oil ends up giving the omelette an oily texture.

Want to try Howard Helmer's 40 second omelette technique? Here are his tips:
How to make an omelette - Howard Helmer-style

  •         Melt a tablespoon of butter in a 10-inch (25 cm) non-stick pan.
  •     The surface of the pan has to be very hot, so only add in the egg mixture once the butter is sizzling.
  •     Combine two eggs with two tablespoons of water for each omelette you make.
  •     Ladle your mixture into the pan. Immediately it will begin to bubble as the water evaporates and creates a fluffy texture.
  •     Use a spatula to immediately move the cooked egg from the edge to the centre of the pan.
  •     Tilt and move your pan to ensure that the raw egg is cooking evenly.
  •     When your egg is still moist, but no longer runny, fill with your ingredients. Howard recommends cheddar cheese, uncooked spinach, mushroom, tomato and ham.
  •     Right-handed cooks should fill their ingredients on the left side of the pan, and vice versa.
  •     Fold the omelette in half with a spatula (fold from the empty side of the omelette) and invert to a serving plate with a quick flip of the wrist.

Sho Yano - Youngest M.D. ever at the University of Chicago

Sho Yano - Youngest M.D. ever at the University of Chicago

A 21-year-old Chicago man who began college at age 9 and medical school three years later is about to become the youngest student ever awarded an M.D. by the University of Chicago.

Sho Yano, who was reading at age 2, writing at 3 and composing music at 5, will graduate this week from the Pritzker School of Medicine, where he also received a Ph.D. in molecular genetics and cell biology.

Yano earned his undergraduate degree from Loyola University at age 12, finishing in three years and graduating summa cum laude, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday. The average age of students entering medical school in the U.S. is 23, and there were schools that refused Yano admittance because of his age. School officials worried that the rigors of medical school would hinder Yano's ability to have a normal adolescence.

"I never understood that," Yano said. "Why would being allowed to challenge yourself be considered more damaging than being totally bored?"

The University of Chicago admitted Yano in 2003.

"I remember interviewing him ... this nice, polite, 11-year-old boy, dressed in a little suit," said Dr. Joel Scwab, a professor of pediatrics who was on the admissions committee. "He was never going to be among typical 11-year-olds, where his mother would drive him to Little League. He was going to be a doctor."

The school made some accommodations because of Yano's age. Unlike most students, who begin their Ph.D. training after their second year of medical school, Yano began his after his first year. That way, he was about 18 when he began his second year of studies toward his M.D., which includes interacting with and examining patients.

Yano, who is an accomplished pianist and has a black belt in tae kwon do, told the paper he hopes his graduation will silence those who questioned his developmental aptitude when he entered medical school.

He is currently preparing for his residency in pediatric neurology, which he became interested in while doing a rotation at LaRabida Children's Hospital in Chicago.

Cuban Giant Bicycle - Felix Guirola super tall bike in Havana

Cuban Giant Bicycle - Felix Guirola super-tall bike in Havana

Many people would be leery of cycling through chaotic downtown Havana, sharing its narrow, potholed streets with the darting scooters, incorrigible jaywalkers and hulking 1950s Detroit classics that clog every byway.

Felix Guirola does it every day, and not on just any bicycle.

Mr Guirola rides 13 feet (4 meters) above the ground atop his homemade super-tall bike, peering over pickup trucks and even buses and without a helmet or other protective gear to break a fall.

Cuban Giant Bicycle - Felix Guirola super tall bike picture

"I feel good up high. I don't get nauseated or dizzy, nothing like that," the 48-year-old Guirola said. "Up there I see the scenery better. I feel relaxed. There's more of a breeze, I breathe it and I feel freer."

Since Mr Guirola sold his home in the central province of Ciego de Avila and moved to Havana in November, the odd spectacle of him pedalling around town at eye-level with second-story apartments has become a daily occurrence. But neighbours still turn their heads and gawk, and smiling tourists whip out digital cameras.

"It's crazy. It must be difficult to keep his balance up there," said Rafael Trejo, a 55-year-old motorist. "And when he comes to a stoplight, he must be a ninja to be able to climb down from there."

In fact, Mr Guirola more resembles a daring child on a jungle gym than a deadly assassin. To mount, he has other people stabilise the bike while he scrambles up the metal frame. When a red light looms, he starts lowering himself while the bike's still in motion, leaps to the ground and grabs the frame before it can topple.

"It's easy. ... It's perfectly normal for me," said Mr Guirola, an athletic man of medium stature who practiced judo and boxing in his youth. "I never get scared, nor have I fallen, and I obey all traffic laws."

Mr Guirola has been riding tall since 1983, when seeing a tandem bike inspired him to build up instead of out. He said his first tall bike measured 5.3 feet (1.6 meters), and they got progressively taller until five years later he was riding 18 feet (5.5 meters) in the air at Ciego de Avila carnivals.

That would put Mr Guirola in the ballpark of the world record.

A representative of Guinness World Records told The Associated Press in an email that it currently recognises as the world's tallest rideable bicycle an 18-foot, 2.5-inch (5.55-meter) contraption that was ridden more than 1,000 feet (300 meters) in 2004 by Canadian Terry Goertzen.

Mr Guirola is nearing completion of another 18-footer to use in Havana, and he's planning a 26-footer (8 meters) sometime in the future. But he said he was returning to Ciego de Avila this week to work out some residency issues, so he's not planning an immediate attempt to mount the taller bike.

His dream is to earn a living from the bike through tips or performance payments, and along the way honour the memory of his disabled sister, who died two decades ago. Mr Guirola's sister Eneida had a brain tumour that was operated on when she was in her early 20s, and afterward had problems with balance and was unable to walk without assistance. After living that way for about a decade she died at age 33.

"I told her that one day with my giant bike I would make enough money to buy her everything she needed for her disability," Mr Guirola recalled tearfully. "Eneida is no longer around to see me, but I want to keep my promise. And if one day I win an award, I'll give part of the money to help disabled children in Cuba like my sister."

For now, the occasional tip isn't enough to pay the bills, and he lives off savings and the meagre income from his wife's privately run cafeteria.

German 'free diver' sets World Records for Longest time holding breath underwater

German 'free diver' sets World Records for Longest time holding breath underwater

A German 'free diver' has apparently entered the Guinness World Records by holding his breath under water for more than 20 minutes.

Tom Sietas, 35, competed with former record holder, Brazilian Ricardo Bahia, to set the new record by not inhaling for 22:22 minutes.

The extraordinary feat is thought to have been completed in China in a pair of tanks next to one another over the weekend. Bahia's previous record was 20:21 minutes.

To help competitors with the task when they were first plunged into the water it was 5°C but as the challenge continued that rose to just shy of 40°C.

Sietas has broken his own records on multiple occasions for the event, officially known as static apnea, since he first started doing it in 2000.

But he has also earned several records for 'dynamic apnea' - swimming as far as possible under water without breathing.

Sietas has said in the past that he does not eat for five hours before carrying out the stunts to slow his metabolism.

He then fills his lungs with as much pure oxygen as he can, but even without that he once held the record for static apnea without pure oxygen first, holding his breath for 10:12mins. The current record was set by Stéphane Mifsud in 2009 with a time of 11:35mins.

Sietas has a lung capacity that is 20 per cent larger than average for a person of his size and his 'talent' was first noticed when his scuba-diver instructor noticed his ability to hold his breath.

Mike Hall set world record for world cycling record

Mike Hall set world record for world cycling record

Mike Hall has won the World Cycle Racing Grand Tour. He rode into Greenwich Observatory today in Britain where he departed exactly 92 days from when he left.

He travelled 24,900 miles and biked 18,000 of them through 20 countries and four continents. He also raised money for the Newborn Vietnam charity, a UK registered charity dedicated to reducing neonatal mortality in South East Asia, with a specific focus on Vietnam.

His average distance over the 92 days was an amazing 200 miles (300 km) a day. Mike Hall has also broken the previous record of around the world cycling record set by Alan Bate in 2010. According to Guinness, Bate circumnavigated the globe in 106 days, 10 hours and 33 minutes. Of course Guinness still has to confirm this new record.

Guinness World Records has decided that instead of having to bike for the whole circumference of the globe, the record is set by riding at least 18,000 and traveling at least 25,000. This allows for transport across Oceans by airlines etc. The rules state “the journey should be continuous and in one direction (East to West or West to East), that the minimum distance ridden should be 18,000 miles, and that the total distance travelled by the bicyle and rider should exceed an Equator’s length, i.e. 24,900 miles.” They also state that: “Any considerable distance travelled opposite to the direction of the attempt must be discounted from any calculations of the overall distance travelled,” and that the route must be ridden through two approximate antipodal points (opposite points on the globe.}

Hall he started in Britain and was racing against 8 other riders. First he biked through all of Europe. Then he flew from Turkey to southern India, where he biked almost to the Bangladesh border. From there, he flew to Australia, crossed that entire continent on a bike, went on to New Zealand and then flew to Vancouver. From Vancouver he rode along the west coast of the United States and through the entire country ending up in Portland, Maine. Then he flew to Portugal and biked back to England to finish the race on this special day… his birthday.

“‘There’s been some moments, some kind of breakdowns, but I keep the breakdowns on the bike, I don’t stop for those.’

“He said the worst thing to happen during the race was when he rode into a hole in Albania. ‘I broke my bike but managed to fix it with some parts I had, then had to ride through the night to get to Greece. There were a few close calls with traffic, but I just tried to keep safe, keep vigilant.

Largest model of a human lung in India set Limca Book of Records by HCG

Largest model of a human lung in India set Limca Book of Records by HCG

HealthCare Global Enterprises Ltd (HCG), the specialist in cancer care, formed the largest model of human lung in India to create awareness on the ill effects of smoking on World No Tobacco Day. This feat is recognized by Limca Book of Records and will be featured in 2013 edition.

The measurement of the thermocol based lung was 8.5 feet in height and 10 feet in width.  The structure of the lung showed a healthy lung on one side and smoker’s lung on the other side. Lung cancer is the leading cancer in men with incidence of 10.7 per 100,000 men/ (PBCR) in Bengaluru. The event was supported by UB City, City Properties Maintenance Company, and People Health.
Largest model of a human lung picture

Dinesh Madhavan, director, HCG, said, “According to WHO reports, in India, 11 per 100, 000 males and 3 per 100,000 females are diagnosed with lung cancer. Lung cancer is among the five main types of cancer leading to overall cancer mortality contributing about 1.3 million deaths/ year globally.”

“There has been a drastic increase  in cancers of the lung, head & neck, due to increased consumption of tobacco, by creating the largest structure of a healthy and a tobacco abused lung,  we are trying to educate the public on harmful effects of tobacco. We are joined in this educative drive by corporate houses and other medical establishments through a series of communication on what is better than smoking.”

Dr. Ashok Shenoy, consultant, head & neck surgeon, HCG, said  “Anti tobacco act should be enforced strongly. Awareness should be created among the impressionable age 13, where 60 per cent of them would have tried tobacco products at least once. Increasing rise of tobacco products has increased the incidences of various types of cancers. It’s time to get our act together and encourage the ban of tobacco products in the state by awareness, education and legislation.”

Gus Martinez Los Angeles police officer set world record for longest Ferris wheel ride

A Los Angeles police officer broke the world record Friday for the longest Ferris wheel ride, spending 25 hours going round-and-round on the Santa Monica Pier, officials confirmed.

Gus Martinez of Carson withstood chilly winds and sleep deprivation to break the record for a good cause: Donations made to his Ferris wheel feat will go to Special Olympics Southern California. The amount was not immediately available.

"I feel energized," Martinez said an hour before he was due to step off the Pacific Park Ferris wheel and claim his new title. Moments earlier, Martinez was seen on a live camera chugging an energy drink.

Guinness World Records has strict guidelines for Ferris wheel record attempts. Martinez could not sleep and was allowed only a five-minute bathroom break every hour he rode. He was, however, able to accumulate longer breaks.

"It was easy," Martinez said. "I had friends here 'til 5 a.m. to keep me company, but power bars got me through most of the day."

The previous record of 24 hours, 30 minutes was set in Dublin, Ireland, in October.
The record attempt was sponsored by Pacific Park and the Special Olympics to help raise money for the athletic program for persons with disabilities.

Officials said Martinez was a natural choice. His 23-year-old son, Jason, is a Special Olympics athlete with Down syndrome, and Martinez coaches several of the organization's sport teams.

Martinez boarded a tricked out gondola on the Ferris wheel Thursday at 7:30 a.m. Park officials installed special seating with additional padding and attached a solar panel for electricity to power his flat-screen TV, iPad and cellphone.

The day started off with much fanfare by media and supporters. With temperatures in the mid-70s, the ride was breezy until an afternoon chill forced him to grab his hat and sweater. The night was surprisingly comfortable, he said.

Visitors stopped by throughout the day, including family, friends and colleagues at the police department. His 24-year-old daughter dropped by at 3 a.m. to bring fresh homemade cookies.

After Martinez finished the challenge, he grabbed the Special Olympics torch that was attached to his gondola throughout the ride and took the stage with his son. Guinness World Records officials stood nearby to confirm the title.
