Solar Manufacturer Amonix Sets New World Record for Solar Panel Efficiency

Solar Manufacturer Amonix Sets New World Record for Solar Panel Efficiency

Amonix, a solar manufacturer based in California, has been focusing on pushing the efficiency of solar modules to new levels. The company specializes in concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) systems – basically solar power enhanced by using mirrors and lenses that bring up the concentrations of sunlight. Amonix has now built a CPV solar module with a peak efficiency of 34.2%, which is the highest rating ever achieved in real-world conditions.

The testing was conducted over several sunny days by National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The Department of Energy once aimed for efficiency rates of photovoltaics to reach “One-third of a sun” (over 33.3%), which Amonix now has made a reality.

“This is a huge milestone for Amonix and the CPV industry. We have been at the forefront of CPV technology breakthroughs and have consistently proven that CPV offers the highest efficiencies of all solar technologies in the right operating conditions with plenty of headroom. Amonix is focused on driving CPV costs down and breaking efficiency records in the near future.” states Vahan Garboushian, the founder and CTO of Amonix.

Note that the efficiency of individual solar cells (not entire modules/panels) typically reaches higher levels. The best solar panels using CPV technology have shown cell efficiency rates of over 43% under ideal conditions; however, entire modules have to be tested to evaluate the potential of the different technologies.

Born before Amelia Earhart, Iowa woman Dina Manfredini has lived in three different centuries on her way to achieving a milestone for longevity.

According to Guinness World Records, Manfredini, of Des Moines, is now the oldest living person in the world at 115 years and 245 days. She assumed that status after the death of Georgia woman Besse Cooper Tuesday at the age of 116.

Manfredini is also the only verified Italian person to reach 115 years old in documented history, according to Robert Young, the senior consultant of gerontology for Guinness World Records. She is just 15 days older than the second-oldest person in the world, Japanese record holder Jiroemon Kimura. She also is about a week away from being named the world’s oldest immigrant, a record set by Danish-born American Christian Mortensen, according to Guinness. (Mortensen died in 1998 at the age of 115 years, 252 days.)

Manfredini was born on April 4, 1897, and grew up in Pievepelago, Italy, before moving to Iowa in 1920 with her late husband, Riccardo. After her husband was injured at work, she helped support the family by working at a food processing factory and at a Des Moines ordnance plant that produced ammunition in World War II. She also cleaned houses on the side, which she continued to do until she was 90 years old, after raising her four children.

Moustafa Ismail biceps - World's biggest arms

Moustafa Ismail biceps - World's biggest arms

The world's largest biceps belong to Mostafa Ismail (Egypt) and were measured for left arm flexed at 64.77 cm (25.5 in) and non-flexed 62.23 cm (24.5 in) and for right arm flexed at 63.5 cm (25 in) and non-flexed 60.96 cm (24 in). The measurements were taken in Franklin, Massachusetts, USA which is where Mostafa now resides.

Moustafa Ismail of Massachusetts says having arms as wide as an adult man's waist comes with plenty of unexpected challenges, including difficulty in finding shirts whose sleeves would fit his 31-inch muscles without dwarfing his 5ft 11 frame.

Moustafa Ismail's eye-popping biceps and triceps are a result of a punishing workout regime that began after a guest at his uncle's wedding mocked his overweight frame in his native Egypt.
                                                  Moustafa Ismail biceps Picture
More than a decade later, the 24-year-old bodybuilder says he was surprised by recognition in the 2013 edition of the Guinness World Records as owner of the largest upper-arm muscles on earth.

"They call me Popeye, the Egyptian Popeye," an amused Ismail said of the media reaction after the announcement in September. But unlike the cartoon character, he says he "hates spinach and loves chicken".

Poultry, seafood and shakes provide nearly seven pounds of protein he needs every day to nourish the massive muscles, Ismail said while working out at the gym in the Boston suburb of Milford.

About nine pounds of carbohydrates, at least three gallons of water as well as various mineral and vitamin supplements account for the remaining sources of sustenance, he says.

Ismail quietly begun building his muscles in his Egyptian hometown of Alexandria before moving to the United States in 2007 and settling in the Massachusetts town of Franklin, located about 27 miles southwest of Boston.

Keen to pay for his gym membership and hefty dietary requirements, he worked two jobs as a gas station attendant for several years. He gave up one job after his Colombian wife complained that he was pushing himself too hard.

And then Guinness World Records came calling, offering him an all-expenses-paid trip to London for a signature appearance with the world's shortest woman and other anomalies highlighting the latest edition of world records.

Ismail said he was stunned by a barrage of allegations from strangers who claimed that he either used steroids or had implants in his arms. Others speculated that he might have injected his muscles with a synthetic oil substance known as synthol that is used by bodybuilders to artificially fluff muscular tissues.

Guinness World Records 2013: Latest Guinness World Records book released

Guinness World Records 2013: latest Guinness World Records book released

From a tiny bull and giant biceps to a slam-dunking parrot and 340-piece drum kit, the latest Guinness World Records book is full of surprises.

This year’s Guinness Book of Records was released today.

The new entries are an intriguing bunch, and include Mostafa ‘Mo’ Ismail, whose biceps, at 31 inches, are as bigger than some waistlines.

Archie, the world’s shortest bull, is just 30 inches high, but “he still thinks that he’s the biggest cow in the herd.” He made a lucky escape, however. If it weren’t for his miniature stature, he’d have been sent to slaughter for beef.

Other record holders are Zac, a parrot who has completed the highest number of slam-dunks in a minute, and Dr Mark Temperaton, owner of the world’s largest drum kit.

Jyoti Amge, 18, from Nagpur, India, takes the title of world’s smallest woman. She stands at just 24.7 inches, and weighs less than a stone.

More than 3,000 children set a world record for simultaneous "shogi" Japanese chess games played in one location during an event at Tokyo Big Sight convention hall on Sunday.

The 1,574 games played by 3,148 children of elementary school age or younger was recognized as a world record by Guinness World Records, organizers said.

"I am excited to see so many children playing shogi. I would not have imagined such a large number of shogi players in my childhood," Japan Shogi Association executive Koji Tanigawa said as he received the certificate from Guinness World Records.

"There won't be another event like this in Tokyo," he said.

Golconda diamond - Most Expensive Diamonds sold at auction in Geneva

Golconda diamond - Most Expensive Diamonds sold at auction in Geneva

The flawless 'Archduke Joseph" diamond, from India's famous Golconda mines, broke several world records when it was sold at auction in Geneva late Tuesday for $21.47 million (16.9 million euros).

The price which the 76 carat jewel fetched at the Christie's sale is a record for the auction of a clear, colourless diamond. It is also the highest auction price per carat for such a gem and the record for a Golconda diamond, the same mines which produced the Koh-i-Noor which adorns the British Queen's crown.
Golconda diamond - Most Expensive Diamonds Picture

"It's a cushion-shaped diamond, weighing 76.02 carats, of D colour" the purest, most colourless variety of diamond, a rarity and a speciality of the ancient Golconda mines in the Indian state of Andhra Paradesh, said Christie's jewelery expert Jean-Marc Lunel.

The 'Archduke |Joseph,' which was bought by an anonymous bidder, once belonged to the Habsburgs, former rulers of the Austrian empire. It takes its name from the Archduke Joseph (1872-1962) who was for a short period the Hungarian head of state.

The diamond was sold in 1936 to a still-anonymous buyer and, hidden in a safe, escaped the attentions of the Nazis during the Second World War. It reappeared on the international scene at a sale in London in 1961.

In the 1990s it was sold again, in Geneva, for $6.5 million.

Christmas World Records attempt to get churches caroling

Christmas World Records attempt to get churches caroling

Churches are being invited to take part once again in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of Christmas carol singers singing together at the same time.

Premier Christian Radio is organising the attempt to smash the record set last year by 18,114 singers in multiple locations. Last year's effort was enough to beat the previous record of 14,100 held by Disney.

Now Premier want to go even further and are looking for more than 300 churches to take part.

Plans for this year's attempt were unveiled as a new survey revealed that less than a quarter (22%) of the nation plan to attend a church carol service this year.

The poll, carried out by ComRes, found that among churchgoers, 61% said they were likely to attend a carol service.

Premier hopes the world record attempt will help congregations swell this Christmas.

“Last year’s record-breaking attempt brought large congregations into churches, many of whom were not regular visitors,” says Peter Kerridge, chief executive of Premier Christian Radio.

“This year’s new attempt on the world record will undoubtedly provide an opportunity for churches to swell their congregations and help to reverse the survey statistics.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for churches to reach out to their local community and share the gospel of Jesus Christ at Christmas."

The world record attempt takes place this year at 7pm on 16 December, when carollers will sing five selected carols.

They are Silent Night, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Away in a Manger, and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

Premier will play the carols on the radio, enabling churches to use the broadcast as their backing music and assisting nationwide unison for the event.

“After last year’s event, we received a broad spectrum of positive reports from churches telling us about unexpectedly large attendances and what an enjoyable evening it had been for all concerned,” said Mr Kerridge.

“Our little church was full to overflowing,” said one carol coordinator.

“It was a really good evening that connected the community with Christ and Christmas,” was the message from another church.

Christine McCallum and her 8.28kg monster pineapple are in the 2013 Guinness World Records.

The gardener, of Bakewell, Palmerston, said: "I'm over the moon. I just couldn't believe it."

But Ms McCallum, 61, said there was one person who was even more excited than she was about the monumental feat - her 10-year-old grandson Isaac Hammond.

A Northern Territory gardener has been officially listed as producing the world's largest pineapple. Christine McCallum, 61, made headlines last November after growing an 8.28kg pineapple that had a girth of 66cm and a length of 32cm.

Ms McCallum, who lives in the Darwin satellite city of Palmerston, told the NT News that she had been named in the 2013 Guinness World Records, an accomplishment that impressed her grandson. "He was jumping up and down and hugging me saying `you're so cool, you're famous'," the paper reported.

Prior to Ms McCallum's efforts, the world's largest pineapple was an 8.06kg fruit grown in Papua New Guinea.

Guinness World Records 2013 goes 3D with augmented reality iOS app

Guinness World Records 2013 goes 3D with augmented reality iOS app.

When I was a kid, comic books cost a quarter, Atari made videogame consoles and personal computers — not just software — and the Guinness Book of World Records was a thick paperback book with a bunch of black and white photos of people with gross, three-foot-long fingernails. A copy of the 2013 edition showed up earlier this week, proving that it’s not just technology that’s changed over those years. Even a large, hardcover book can be updated to make trivia more interesting and incorporate your iOS or Android device to make those paper pages seem a little less static. Don’t worry, not everything has changed — the fingernails are still there (pages 74-75).
Once you pick up a copy of the book itself ($28.95 list price, currently selling on Amazon for $19.11), the next step is to download the free Guinness World Records 2013 Augmented Reality app (also available for Android). There’s also a second, free app, Guinness World Records 2013 The Bonus Chapter, which is an e-book full of supplemental material that’s not included in the dead tree version. The former lets you point a camera-equipped smartphone or tablet at designated pages to see an animation something like this:

would be enough to spike some interest in kids who are increasingly expectant of such things, but it’s limited to only a half dozen instances through the nearly 300 pages, so I wouldn’t be looking at this as adding an immersive new element to the experience. That being said, my 10-year-olds were on this book pretty quickly, sitting together on the couch and flipping through the glossy pages.

Among the Guinness world records that might be of interest to GeekDad readers (spoiler alert, although if you’re a regular GeekDad reader, the odds are pretty good you already know these):
                                                      GWR2013 Augmented Reality
Largest concentration of observatories: Mauna Kea in Hawaii with 13, including the world’s largest infrared and submillimeter telescopes.
Furthest distance from Earth traveled by humans: 248,655 miles by the Apollo 13 crew back in 1970.
Largest collection of Superman memorabilia goes to Herbert Chavez of the Philippines with 1,253 Superman-related items (to go along with his extensive Superman-inspired plastic surgeries).
The Library of Congress in Washington DC (Serials and Government Publications Division) holds the record for having the largest collection comics in a museum, with over 100,000 issues covering over 5,000 different titles.
The most successful merchandise franchise in movies? Yeah, it’s Star Wars.

The augmented reality Guinness World Records 2013 is intended as a bridge between old-school paper books and modern content consumption.

Dushehra Mahotsav 2012 - World's tallest raavan in Barara, Ambala

Barara: When thousands of Ravana effigies go up in flames on Wednesday, the 195-feet Ravana here will dwarf all others in India.

The Ravana structure in Barara town in Haryana’s Ambala district had last year entered the Limca Book of Records with a height of 185 feet.
                                                         World's tallest raavan picture
The Ramlila committee at Barara, 80 km from Chandigarh, has now approached the Guinness Book of World Records for getting the 195-feet structure enlisted as the tallest Ravana in the world.

“A team of over 100 people have worked very hard in the last few weeks to prepare the Ravana,” committee president Tejinder Singh Chauhan said.

The Barara Ravana, built at a cost of Rs.15 lakh, will go up in smoke Wednesday.

Over 100 quintals of paper, 30 quintals of iron pipes and 10 quintals of clothes were used to make it. It weighs around four tonnes (4,000 kg). The sword held by the Ravana itself is 48 feet long.

“The height from the knees to the shoulder is over 85 feet,” an artisan at the site said.

The town had its share of limelight for the first time when it erected a 150-feet tall Ravana structure. Since then, every year, the committee has been increasing the height.

The 2009 Ravana, at 175 feet, entered the Limca Book of Records.

World's largest sneaker collection

World's largest sneaker collection set world record by Las Vegas

The record keepers at Guinness certified this month that Jordan Michael Geller's Shoezeum, a shrine to Nike that he says includes one of every model of Air Jordans ever made, holds the record with more than 2,500 pairs, all but eight of which are Nikes.

For a $10 ticket, visitors can see Nikes designed to evoke "birds, bees, flowers and trees," others based on the Simpsons, the Hulk, the Human Torch and even Sesame Street's Oscar the Grouch, and two pairs of yellow lobster Nikes. Only three dozen of those were made, according to Geller.

Geller, 35, said it wasn't until he finished law and business school degrees at the University of San Diego that he began transforming a childhood fascination with Nike sneakers into a life project.

Starting with $300 and more than a dozen credit cards, Geller began a five-year buying and selling spree, hunting down remainders and sales at Nike stores and offering the sneakers on eBay. Along the way, he got hold of some rare Nikes online.

Less than a dozen pairs of the shoes at the museum have been worn - but those include a pair that Michael Jordan laced on as a rookie for the Chicago Bulls. The most expensive? A pair made by Converse commemorating the 30th anniversary of Jordan's 1982 game-winning shot for the University of North Carolina in the NCAA finals. They cost $7,100.

Geller began showing his collection out of a San Diego warehouse last year before he decided to hit the road to Las Vegas. Along the way, he felt guided by destiny - including his name, which he said his parents gave him without thinking of Michael Jordan the player.

The world's smallest car measures just 45.2 cm tall. Mirai, which means "future" in Japanese, has just entered the Guinness World Records for being the lowest roadworthy car.

It was created by students and teachers of the automobile engineering course of Okayama Sanyo High School in Asakuchi, Japan, the Daily Mail reported on Wednesday.

It runs on six main batteries. The motors and controlling components are from "Q-car", produced by CQ motors in Japan, while the switching console is from a motorbike.

The chassis, body, suspension, steering system, lights, seat and all other parts were made at the high school.

The record for the lowest car has been held in the past by British motor fanatic Andy Saunders, from Poole, Dorset, when he built a 21 inch (53 cm) version using a rusty 1989 Fiat 126.

"Our director conceptualised the design and it was later taken over and executed by the weaving team. It's a team effort and the credit goes to Chennai Silks," Ramesh said. The Rs.40 lakh sari was made on a request from a Kuwait-based businessman, who wants to remain anonymous.

Chennai Silks completed the first such sari Nov 26, 2007 and sold it Jan 5, 2008 to a Bangalore-based businessman, who bought the sari on the occasion of his 10th wedding anniversary.

World's largest school sets Guinness Records by the City Montessori School

World's largest school sets Guinness Records by the City Montessori School

A Lucknow school has earned the distinction of being the “largest school by pupils” in the world and has made it to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The City Montessori School with a record 45,000-plus students has been adjudged the largest in the world on the basis of number of pupils, according to the school founder manager Jagadish Gandhi.
The City Montessori - World's largest school picture

The record book said that the school had 39,437 students on August 9, 2010 enrolled at its different branches in the city, which made it the largest in the world.

The school had started its journey way back in 1959 with merely five students from a single room and with a loan of Rs 300, said Gandhi while speaking to Deccan Herald here on Sunday.

“It has been a long journey that has witnessed several ups and downs”, Gandhi says and attributes the success of the school and the achievements to the continued support of the parents, students and the dedicated staff and the school’s philosophy, that placed spiritual development at the centre. “True progress of humanity is impossible unless and until the goals to which education is geared are completely revised with spiritual development at its centre, not as an add on at the margins of education”, he said.

Gandhi felt that these new goals for education would free it from its largely economic context.

Microsoft - World’s largest coding marathon in Bangalore

Microsoft - World’s largest coding marathon in Bangalore

Code warriors are going to love this: ahead of the launch of the latest iteration of the Windows OS, Microsoft hosted the world’s largest coding marathon in Bangalore, India.

Beginning September 21 at 2pm on a sunny Friday, thousands of talented programmers and designers (including enthusiasts, students and professionals) settled into an 18-hour session, building apps to show off their skills and harness the power of Windows 8. The event set a Guinness World Record for the planet’s largest ever app development marathon.

A total of 2,567 developers participated in the marathon and were watchfully monitored by Guinness World Records officials over the span of the event. Armed with their own laptops running Windows 8 RTM and Visual Studio Express 2012, and grouped into teams of up to four members each, the throng of developers worked through nearly an entire day turning their ideas into downloads. App ideas were accepted in 20 categories, including Business, Education, Finance, Games, Music & Video, Productivity, Social and Sports.

The coding marathon wasn’t a race to the finish line, though — developers were encouraged to begin working on their apps before the actual event, and did not need to finish coding at the end of the allotted time to be counted as part of the record. Those who did however, had a chance to submit their apps for review to Microsoft’s App Excellence Labs on-site, in order to receive feedback and/or acceptance of their app into the Windows Store (where apps for Windows 8 will be made available).

Participants were also allowed to seek help from available mentors, IT assistants, recognized app developers and Microsoft engineers at the venue. Food and beverages were also provided to sustain the army of coders through the long session.

Discussing the event at hand, Pramanik continued, “The Windows AppFest will encourage budding developers, technology enthusiasts and entrepreneurs to innovate on next-generation Windows technology, crucial for the development of the local software ecosystem and the long-term economic growth of India’s IT industry.”

Pramanik then invited on stage Jon DeVaan, Corporate Vice President, Windows Development, who spoke about the importance of developers to Microsoft’s success and expressed his excitement about the marathon. “India is home to some of the world’s most talented developers. We are focused on enabling developers to succeed as they build the next generation of apps. I can’t wait to see some of these apps being built at the Windows AppFest.”

Medusa - World’s Largest Snake

Medusa - World’s Largest Snake

Shortly after the release of the 2013 Guinness World Records book, a new record has already slithered its way into the books, with the world’s largest snake in captivity.

The new record-breaking snake is a 25 feet and two inch long Reticulated Python named Medusa, who lives at The Edge of Hell attraction in Kansas City, Missouri, reports The Examiner.

The Edge of Hell attraction is run by Full Moon Productions and uses Medusa to entertain visitors at the attraction, particularly those afraid of snakes.

She is a 350-pound reticulated python who usually sits in a small nook of the attraction coiled up, seemingly enjoying her posh lifestyle. The Daily Mail notes that Medusa’s handler and Edge of Hell general manager, Larry Edgar states that:

“We try to keep Medusa well-fed and slightly out of reach as there have been instances with Reticulated Pythons where they’ve had to cut people out of them! We never underestimate that she does always have the upper-hand.”

Despite the fact that Reticulated Pythons are known for wrapping themselves around humans, Medusa has been known to nudge her handler, Edgar, for his assistance in shedding her skin, especially when it gets tough.

She often gets a large crowd when she makes rare visits to local parks around Kansas City as well. Amber Arnett-Bequeaith,Vice President of Full Moon Productions and Medusa’s Spokesperson, states that:

Geordie Pantsman World Record for wearing 211 pairs of underpants at the same time

Geordie Pantsman World Record for wearing 211 pairs of underpants at the same time.

The 53-year-old, from Whitburn, South Tyneside, pulled on 302 pairs of slacks to grab back his title and set a new Guinness World Record. ‘I think I’m the first person to hold the record twice, probably because no one else is daft enough to do it twice,’ he said after his latest triumph. Mr Craig, dubbed Geordie Pantsman, shot to fame in 2010 when he pulled on a record-breaking 211 pairs of underpants, later auditioning for TV show Britain's Got Talent. However he lost the record earlier this year to Janine Keblish of the US after she squeezed on a whopping 252 pairs.

On Sunday the determined dad-of-three reclaimed his record and is awaiting confirmation from Guinness World Records. 'It went very, very well and the official number is 302,' explained the architect. 'I wanted to be the first person to put on over 300 pairs and I did it. 'Putting on all those pants is harder than it looks because you're carrying an incredible weight, but the crowd really spurred me on and kept me going.

'There must have been about 1,000 people in that tent and they were all cheering me on.' He added: 'My wife Jacqueline helps me out with this one by getting all the pants ready and helping me get them on, but she doesn't like the limelight as much as I do. 'I think this is it now though, I'm not going to go and attempt any more world records.

World's heaviest onion - World's Biggest onion

The world's heaviest onion has gone on display at a horticultural show in Yorkshire.

Peter Glazebrook's prize-winning onion weighed in at 18lb 1oz, beating his previous record of 17lb 5oz set last year at the Harrogate Autumn Flower Show.

Glazebrook told PA: "It was such a surprise. I didn't expect it at all. I had weighed it at home but you never know how much it is going to weigh once it is trimmed of its leaves and roots and weighed by officials at the show.

"I had a feeling it was close but when we found out it was over the record, well I was very pleased."
                                                World's heaviest onion picture
Glazebrook took a total of nine first prize awards at the show, including an award for a marrow weighing 119lb 12oz and a giant cabbage weighing 81lb 6oz, which had to be moved around the showground in a wheelbarrow.

He had spent 25 years trying to claim the title for the world's heaviest onion, and added that his achievement felt "amazing".

Glazebrook attributed the secret of his success to growing his onions in large pots instead of directly into garden soil.

Largest collection of pizza memorabilia for Guinness World Record

Largest collection of pizza memorabilia for Guinness World Record

Let us count the ways: He holds the Guinness World Record for largest collection of pizza memorabilia; he has a caricature of himself, eating pizza, tattooed on his back with the phrase "Totally saucesome!"; and he is the driving force behind Pizza Brain, which he describes as the nation's first pizza museum.

The quirky but unassuming establishment that Dwyer just opened with three partners in Philadelphia is part art gallery, part eatery. It's a place to enjoy a slice or two of artisan pie while gawking at pizza-related photos, records, knickknacks and videos.

"We thought it was a funny idea, and we started doing some research," Dwyer said. "And when we discovered that nowhere on earth was there a physical place, a monument built to pizza, we said, 'This is going to be huge.'"

He was right: Hundreds of people turned out for the Sept. 7 grand opening of Pizza Brain, which occupies a pair of rowhouse storefronts in the city's Fishtown neighborhood.

One wall is covered with framed pizza-related photos and magazine covers; another boasts dozens of vinyl records, like the soundtrack to "Mystic Pizza" and a holiday album from Domino's. Display boxes are scattered throughout the eclectic space — including built into the floor — to show off pizza-bearing figurines from Homer Simpson and Spider-Man to the Tasmanian Devil and Pillsbury Doughboy. A cluster of small TVs plays pizza-related shows, while a huge pizza mural surrounds the back patio.

Dwyer, 28, said he had a nominal assemblage of mementoes a couple of years ago when friends decided to create an art exhibit called "Give Pizza Chance." Reaction was so positive that he continued collecting, becoming the world-recorder holder with 561 items in July 2011. He now owns a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles "Pizza Drop" arcade game and Star Trek Enterprise pizza cutter.

World’s youngest skydiver - Krish Shanghvi

World’s youngest skydiver - Krish Shanghvi

Krish Shanghvi, the eight-year old from Mumbai recently became the youngest skydiver on the planet, when he jumped off a plane from an altitude of 10,000 feet in Mozzel Bay, South Africa.

The act involved a thrilling 45-second free fall at 200 kilometers per hour, before the parachute unfurled.

Shanghvi achieved the dive in tandem with trainer Mr. Henk Van Wky.

His elder brother, Parth, holds the record of becoming the youngest scuba diver in the world. Parth achieved the feat in February 2010 in Goa.

Speaking to mediapersons, Shanghvi’s father, Mehul Upendra Shanghvi, said that Krish was inspired by Parth’s achievements.

“Getting inspired by his brother’s feat, young Krish, who was only six years then, wanted to break some record,” he said.

“We thought of skydiving, but in India the minimum age for skydiving is 16. So, we contacted some skydiving centers in Slovenia, where there is no age restriction for skydiving. But Krish was too small to fit in the Harness then” he added.

The standard three student from SVKM International School in Vile Parle has been awarded a certificate by Unique World Records, and the family has also applied to Limca Book of Records to have his name included.

Previously, the youngest skydiver in the world was Romanian girl Valentina Mihanciu, who performed the feat at the age of nine.

The record of being the youngest skydiver in India was held by Kolkata’s Anaina Malik who had achieved the feat at the age of 13, jumping in Mauritius.

Vellore Institute of Technology - Highest placements done by one company in a day

BANGALORE: Vellore Institute of Technology's students got 1492 job offers from Accenture, 1,308 offers from Wipro and 803 from Cognizant. Around 55 companies were part of the placement drive at VIT to pick up their lot from the 2700 students.

A record 3,603 jobs were offered to VIT University students during the three-day campus placement programme that concluded here on Sunday. While Accenture offered the highest number of 1,492 jobs, Wipro handed over 1,308 job offers to the jubilant students and Cognizant Technology Solutions ending up with 803 jobs.

The recruitment process consisted of screening tests and interview sessions. VIT University Vice President G V Sampath said, “The scenario is that of a big recession. Every company wants to cut recruitment by 50 per cent and several institutions are feeling the heat. The European slow down is having its impact on the placement initiatives of the big companies.”

Last year, the university had entered the Limca Book of Records for achieving the highest placements done by a single company on a single day.

“We are creating a record this year too,” said G V Sampath while addressing the students who had assembled to receive their job offer letters from the three companies. The University this year saw Wipro, Accenture and Cognizant conduct their placement drives screening the students on the first day and interviewing them for the next two days.

Samuel Rajkumar, Deputy Director of Placement Centre at the university, said, “Flipkart has already conducted the campus placement drive with us offering jobs to four students. They have offered `12.5 lakh per annum as salary package while DE Shaw, a software company has offered has offered `14.5 lakh.”

According to the university, a total of 55 companies had conducted placement drives this year. “Every year, 150 to 160 companies come to the university. Last year, 188 companies had come for placements and this year we are trying as many as possible. In fact, last year, we had 95 per cent placement record with 3,007 students placed,”, Rajkumar noted.

He also composed several Malayalam film songs in the 1970s and 1980s and is called Gana Gandharvan or Celestial Singer.

In 2006, he sang 16 film songs in four South Indian languages on the same day at AVM Studio, Chennai; the 16th song won him a Kerala State Award.

In 1970 he was nominated to head the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy and was the youngest person to occupy the post.

US athlete Aries Merritt sets world record in 110-m hurdles

U.S. athlete Aries Merritt sets world record in 110-m hurdles at Brussels' King Baudouin Stadium on Friday.

Aries Merritt already had the Olympic gold, so there was only one way to make this season even more special.

And in his last near-perfect 100-meter hurdles race of the year, the American put in a world record-breaking performance that had even himself shaking his head in disbelief.

Merritt finished in 12.80 seconds at the Van Damme Memorial, slicing a full 0.07 seconds off the four-year-old world record held by Cuba’s Dayron Robles.

In an event where records are usually broken by one or two hundredths of a second at a time, Merritt was as stunned as the crowd when his time came up.

“It was ‘What? What? What is this I am seeing?” he said. “I just started screaming because I was in complete shock because I could not believe I could run that fast.”

It was by far the marquee moment of the final Diamond League meet of the season, totally upstaging Usain Bolt’s routine 100-meter victory in 9.86.

Merritt shot out of the blocks and didn’t touch any of the 10 hurdles he swept over. Sensing the moment had come, he lunged at the line with both arms flung backward and chest outward.

The American already had the six top times of the season and had come within 0.05 seconds of Robles’ mark. But in balmy conditions with a slight tail wind, he finally shattered the record.

“It was almost perfect,” Merritt said. “I knew the track was going to be scorching.”

So was he.

Merritt dominated this entire season while stars like Liu Xiang and Robles struggled to keep up and then both pulled up injured at the London Olympics.

“I knew one day (I’d break the record), I didn’t know when,” he said. “It was kind of getting frustrating, because I kept running the same time over and over.”

Time to change it to 1280.

“I was in shock when I saw the time pop up on the scoreboard,” he said.

It was the biggest improvement of the record in 31 years.

Jason Richardson took second place, way behind in a time of 13.05.

Bolt, for once, was almost an afterthought. The triple Olympic champion ran a controlled race after a slow start to win the 100 in 9.86 seconds and win the diamond trophy for the top competitor of the season.

“I want to take it easy now,” Bolt said.

Fellow Jamaican sprinter Yohan Blake followed it up with a blistering 200, blasting out fast from the gun before finishing in 19.54 seconds, unchallenged by anyone.

Moustafa Ismail - World's biggest biceps - Biggest biceps in the world

Moustafa Ismail - World's biggest biceps - Biggest biceps in the world 2012

Guinness World Records has launched the latest edition of its best-selling book documenting global achievement, including new entries for the shortest bull, the oldest gymnast and the lowest ever car.

The 57th version of the best-selling reference book also features new verified entries for the world’s heaviest sportswoman and the most conquests of Mount Everest, as well as the tallest ever dog.

Being published in 22 languages in more than 100 countries, the 2013 Guinness World Records is expected to sell around 2.7 million copies and documents numerous new extremes relating to the human body.

Some of the new record holders posed for the media on Wednesday in front of London’s iconic Tower Bridge. They included Australian Chayne Hultgren, holder of the record for most swords swallowed simultaneously, and the world's shortest living woman, Indian Jyoti Amge, who stands at just 62.8cm.

Amongst those recognized for their feats of human nature are 86-year-old Johanna Quaas, a retired PE teacher from Leipzig, Germany, who is named the oldest gymnast and London-based sumo wrestler Sharran Alexander, who weighs 203.21 kg (32 stone), and was named the world’s heaviest sportswoman.

Egyptian-born Moustafa Ismail, recognised for having the largest “guns” - biceps and triceps - with a circumference of 25.5in; Bodybuilder Mr Ismail, now living in Franklin, Massachusetts, has arms with a greater circumference than the average human head. The 24-year-old, originally from Alexandria, Egypt, hopes his record-breaking status will be a springboard to become a professional body-builder.

“Next year’s going to be like, I’m waiting to get to 30 inches by next year. I wanna get my max. Plus my dreams is forever, I said, until I die: in the gym.”

The book celebrates records from the animal kingdom such as the world’s shortest bull (76.2cm), tallest dog (1.118m) and tallest horse (210.19cm).

Archie may be the world's shortest bull, but his lack of height has helped him to live a much longer life.

Originally destined for the butcher’s knife the 29-month-old Decter breed bull was spared by his County Armagh owners when they became so fond of him they decided to keep him.

Records are not just awarded for stand out size though.

Zac, a parrot from California, holds the record for the most basketball slam dunks in one minute by a parrot.

American Mark Temerato, owner of the largest drum kit in the world, insists he can hit everyone of his 340 piece kit.

“It was my boys who prompted me to really go for a Guinness World Record cos (because) I’ve always had the biggest kit they thought and I thought that too. But I've just come out from the drum closet and now I have the largest drum set in the world,” said Temperato, a member of the band Jesus the Soul Solution.

Temperato’s drum kit is dwarfed in size by two other collections that have made it into the book.

In Germany Bettina Dorfmann holds the record for the largest collection of Barbie dolls, at 15,000 items. While Japanese Asako Kanda holds a similar record for her Hello Kitty collection, with 4,519 items of memorabilia.

California's,Death Valley - World's hottest temperature ever on Earth

California's, Death Valley - World's hottest temperature ever on Earth

California's famed Death Valley now holds the world record for the hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth.

One of weather's most iconic and hallowed statistics, the Earth's all-time warmest temperature -- supposedly set 90 years ago today at a remote spot in the Libyan desert -- has been deemed invalid: New analysis of past weather data found that record of 136 degrees to be incorrect.

The new record, which was formerly No. 2 on the all-time list: the beastly 134-degree reading measured on July 10, 1913, in Death Valley, Calif.

"This is as symbolic a mark for meteorologists as Mount Everest is for geographers," said Christopher Burt, a weather historian with the Weather Underground, a private meteorology company.

The Libyan record from 1922 was determined to be invalid because of the combination of a poor weather instrument, a location in a bad spot for accurate readings and an inexperienced record-keeper.

Based on these findings, an international team of climate experts from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) invalidated the 136-degree reading measured at El Azizia, Libya, on Sept. 13, 1922.

The team included 13 atmospheric scientists from nine countries.

One of the team members -- Khalid Ibrahim El Fadli, director of the climate department at the Libyan National Meteorological Center -- literally had to dodge bullets and protect his family during the nation's revolution last year while undertaking the research. One of his discoveries, amazingly, was the original 1922 log sheet used to take the measurements, which showed some discrepancies.

"This investigation demonstrates that, because of continued improvements in meteorology and climatology, climate experts can now re-analyze past weather records in much more detail than ever before," said Randy Cerveny, a member of the WMO and professor of geography at Arizona State University.

The results are being published in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.

Death Valley has a hellish climate almost unlike any other spot on the planet: "With an average daily high of 115 degrees and a low of 87 during the month of July, Death Valley is far and away the hottest location in North America and perhaps the hottest place in the world," Burt writes in his book Extreme Weather.

The desert location, about 200 miles northeast of Los Angeles and about 100 miles west of Las Vegas, averages only about 2 inches of rain each year, according to the National Park Service. Once, during a 40-month period in 1931-34, it received just over a half inch of rain, in total.

To prove it works, they flew over their farm in a helicopter and held a phone out the window.

The family has grown corn mazes for the past 13 years and the public can pay a fee and try to find their way through the puzzles.

"We were pretty excited when it worked," said Rachel Kraay about the first time they tested the QR code from the helicopter.

"We actually have a video of us doing it because [Guinness] wanted lots of documentation to make sure it actually happened."

The family's previous mazes have included maps of Alberta, Canada, and team logos for the Edmonton Oilers and the Calgary Flames.

Within minutes.

The 25,979 square feet floral arrangement on ground was created in eight minutes and 20 seconds by 500 artists. These artists are the winners of district level Pookalam contest — ‘Reach for the stars,’ — organised by Vivel in Kerala, in connection with the Onam celebrations. Guinness Records representative Philip Robertson verified the record for biggest burger. He called the feat a result of 'remarkable teamwork' and said the burger 'actually tastes really good.'

A Duluth News Tribune report says the previous mark was a mere 881lb, 13oz.

Black Bear's burger included 60lb of bacon, 50lb of lettuce, 50lb of sliced onions, 40lb of pickles and 40lb of cheese.

With an average quarter-pound bacon double cheeseburger, as served by Burger King, containing 580 calories, Black Bear's sandwich contains a phenomenal 4.1million.

It took about four hours to cook the patty using an outdoor oven heated by propane torches to 350F (175C). A crane was used to flip it.

When the mammoth burger was completed, it was served to gamblers as part of the casino's Big Burger Bash.

Largest Seafood Stew Sets Guinness World Record by UMass Amherst

Largest Seafood Stew Sets Guinness World Record by UMass Amherst

Amherst — Moments after the University of Massachusetts broke the world record for whipping up the largest seafood stew Monday, hundreds of students lined up to break their own personal records for seafood consumption.

For an hour, a team of chefs had been assembling and stirring the ingredients – 1,000 pounds of seafood, 1,137 pounds of potatoes, 575 pounds of onions and much, much more – in a 1-ton frying pan on a traffic island opposite the Haigis Mall on Massachusetts Avenue.

The school’s goal was simple: setting a new Guinness World Record for seafood stew, similar to the record it set last year for stir-fry with a 4,010-pound creation.

For students, the reasons for attending the back-to-school celebration were more pragmatic.

“If someone is going to offer me free lobster, I’m not going to walk away,” said Cameren Cabeceiras, a sophomore from of Fall River.

Along with non-fish-eating friend Isabella Chen of Westford, Cabeceiras waited as the cooking crew brought the lobster, mussels, clams, haddock and salmon to a boiling point, making it suitable for serving.

As the crowd gathered around the huge, steaming vat, students jockeyed for position to get a glimpse, and maybe a cell-phone photo, of what exactly 6,500 pounds of fish stew looked like.

At one point, the crowd chanted “Fish Stew. Fish Stew. Fish Stew.”

By 6:30, the smell of 1,000 pounds of cooking fish was drifting across campus. The crowd was getting larger and hungrier, and some wondered whether neighborhood cats would be arriving soon.

The wait for the world record ended at about 6:50 p.m., when 6,500 pounds mark was reached and Queen’s “We Are The Champions” began echoing across the mall.
