World’s largest carnitas taco set World Record by Mexican city of Queretaro

World’s largest carnitas taco set World Record by Mexican city of Queretaro

The country that holds the record for the world’s largest cheesecake, meatball and pair of trousers can now add another name to the list in the Guinness book of world records.

The Mexican city of Querétaro set a new record with the world’s largest carnitas taco, measuring 73 meters and using 150 thousand kilos of pork. Besides the the massive amount of pork, 700 thousand kilos of tortillas, 500 kilos of tomatoes 300 kilos of onions and 20 kilos de cilantro were used to put the taco together.

Staff of The Guinness World Records certified the achievement, which involved volunteers and students from National College of Professional Education, Tec Milenio University and the Culinary Institute of Advanced Studies.

With hundreds of people watching on, the taco was assembled on a huge table in a garden in the heart of Querétaro. The official Guinness World Records measurement surpassed the former record, which was only 65 meters long, and involved 150 thousand kilos of the pulled pork.

Once the record was broken, the tasty tortilla did not go to waste, as it was distributed among the volunteers, chefs and crowd who came to see the event.

The idea behind the giant taco was the brainchild of the Board of Querétaro's Kitchen, whose president, Francisco Reséndiz, said the "tacote" cost around 700 thousand pesos, or $50,000, and was meant to promote Querétaro and its local cuisine.

Longest Yule log cake sets Guinness World Record by Pudong Shangri-La

Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai will attempt to break the existing Guinness World Record for the longest Yule log cake  at 10am on December 1.

The hotel pastry chefs hope to break the record, which stands at 207.8m-long, by creating an 888m-long cake.

The existing record was unveiled by Philippe Gardette of the Ordre Culinaire International and Jean-Claude Méritte and Nathalie Raphael of CODECOM (all from France), in La Défense, Paris, France on December 1, 2010.

This time, 80 chefs of Pudong Shangri-La, Shanghai will showcase their masterful expertise with flour and eggs, and the cake will start at the hotel’s Grand Tower lobby and cross the entire length of the River Wing lobby, spread over two staircases in its path.

Visitors are invited to watch the event. This is the first time that a hotel in China has made a Guinness World Record attempt, and a cake 888m-long has been chosen because the number “eight” in Chinese also represents fortune, good luck and prosperous.

A representative from the Guinness Book of World Records will be present to witness the event, alongside children from the Shanghai Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and students from Pudong Special Educational School.

Largest gathering of pirates in one place - Penzance town set world pirate record

Largest gathering of pirates in one place - Penzance town set world pirate record

A west Cornwall town is celebrating after being officially recognised as a world record breaker.

The Guinness World Records have confirmed that Penzance now holds the title for the largest gathering of pirates in one place.

On Sunday 25 June, 8,734 people in fancy dress assembled on Penzance promenade at 13:00 BST.

They have now officially broken the previous record set by 6,166 pirates in Hastings in 2010.

The pirate gathering was part of the town's annual Golowan Festival which celebrates the traditional feast of St John.

Pirate ships

The record attempt was the brainchild of Penzance resident, Angie Butler, who wanted her home town, made famous by the Gilbert and Sullivan opera, "The Pirates of Penzance", to hold the pirate record.

Participants were asked to wear pirate items including bandanas, cut off trousers, eye patches, pirate hats and cutlasses.

Organiser Andy Hazelhurst said: "We had all sorts of standards of costume from Johnny Depp look-a-likes to little kids with stripy t-shirts.

"We even had dogs dressed up, although they didn't get counted."

They were counted on to the promenade in Penzance by official counters.
