Fastest crossing of the Sahara Desert by bike set Guinness World Record 2011

A market security analyst from London hopes to have entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the fastest crossing of the Sahara Desert by bike.

Riding a Ridgeback Panorama, Reza Pakravan cycled a gruelling 1,200 mile journey experiencing extreme heat, sandstorms, accusations of terrorism from border officials and living on survival rations. On Thursday March 17th he completed the crossing after 14 days, starting in Algeira and finishing in Sudan.

Pakravan is now waiting for the challenge to be confirmed by Guinness officials.

He said: “It is an amazing feeling to have cycled across the biggest desert in the world.

“Unfortunately these days Sahara desert has become one of the most dangerous places in the world. On the west of Sahara, border areas between Mali, Niger and Algeria is becoming one of the most hostile areas in the world. Then there has been the current situation in Libya.

“I had my fair share of problems before I’d even started cycling. First I had problems in Algiers Airport because they thought my CO2 cartridge could be used to detonate a bomb! I spent two hours explaining and finally managed to save them from being taken away from me. Then just before the start I had problem with my GPS and the bike computer and then two flat tyres in one day.”

“In north of the Sahara it was very cold, even during the day. As I progress towards the south got warmer and warmer. In Sudan it was really hot and I had to cycle in desert tracks and sand which was really tough.

"It was an amazing experience. My Ridgeback Panorama was fantastic for this trip. It was reliable and comfortable and survived a pretty arduous trip, which is testament to the bike.”

Not content with the ridiculousness of those records themselves, we shot a video of Bajagain eating the grapes, sped it up and set it to the theme from the Benny Hill Show. You're welcome, world.

At the end of the day, Bajagain managed to eat 180 grapes total, beating the previous record of 172 grapes set by Ashrita Furman in June 2010.

They were just the most recent world records set here in Colorado.

Bajagain also tore 44 envelopes in half in 30 seconds, beating the previous record by eight envelopes and bringing Bajagain's total Guinness world records to six -- he said Saturday after the event that he intends to break at least six more before the year is over.

Both attempts will have to be verified by the Guinness World Records office.

Ticket and food sales from the Work for Children Food Campaign 2011 will go towards feeding hungry children in Colorado and around the world, including Nepal, Haiti and Africa.

DUBAI man dubbed the 'French Spider-Man' today described reaching the top of the world's tallest building as "an amazing sight and an amazing feeling".

Alain Robert took six hours, 14 minutes and 55 seconds to scramble to the top of the Burj Khalifa, completing the feat at the top of the antenna at 12.07am today.

"It was a very big moment in my life," said Mr Robert, 44.

Early this afternoon Mr Robert was presented with a certificate from Guinness World Records to recognise the climb, which marks a new world record: the fastest person to climb the Burj Khalifa.

Mr Robert easily achieved the record, which was created for Mr Robert's attempt. The organisation had required only that he complete the climb within nine hours.

The attempt was originally scheduled to start at 4.30pm. But, as Mr Robert explained, he held off until 6pm due to a deluge of media interviews earlier in the day.

"I wasn't sure how long it would take, I initially thought it would take between six to nine hours," he said. "It took me by surprise that I could make it quite fast."

Mr Robert is famous for climbing the world's tallest buildings - among them the 508-metre Taipei 101 and the 450-metre Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur - without the aid of the safety harness and rope normally used by climbers.

"It was a requirement from the government and the head of the Burj Khalifa," he said. "I would have loved to do it differently, but of course I knew it was not possible, so I was having to play the game."

Although, they can bank their break time and Katie said they're not too tired yet and have no plans of backing down.

The pot weighs in at 172 kilograms, is 246 centimeters in height, and measures in at 520 centimeters tall and 214 wide centimeters, at its largest and smallest circumference, respectively.

Primarily consisting of clay and glaze, the pot was made by kneading the clay and firing it in a 1,300-degree Celsius kiln.

Roughly the size of a small bathroom, the pot has already been certified as the largest here, by the Korea Record Institute.

With resources provided by the county, the Ulju Oegosan Onggi Association completed the pot, commonly used to produce staple dietary items, in late September.

Ashby School attempts to break world record for the largest rugby scrum

Students and staff from a Leicestershire school say they are confident they have broken the world record for the largest rugby scrum.

The 126 members of Ashby School's Bullen House made their attempt under the supervision of two adjudicators.

Guinness World Records will now examine photographs and video of the scrum to establish whether the school has beaten the existing record of 68.

The sponsored event was in aid of the Matt Hampson Foundation.

The charity was set up by the former Leicester Tigers player, who was paralysed from the neck down when a scrum collapsed while he was training with England's Under-21 team in March 2005.

It helps to raise money for seriously injured sportsmen and women.
Motivational talk

Mr Hampson visited the school last month and gave the students a motivational talk.

Student Tom Watts, who took part in the record attempt, said: "Hearing Matt Hampson talk about what he'd been through made us think that, if he can do that, we can do anything."

The participants attended workshops "to be taught how to take up the scrum position" for the world record attempt.

Teacher Nick Morse, who ran the sessions, said: "The purpose of the scrum training was to let them all know where they were supposed to be in the scrum, where their heads should be and how to bind together in the right way so they didn't collapse.

"It was a non-competitive scrum with no pushing so there was no danger of anyone being hurt," he added.

The possible record-breakers are now preparing for their next challenge - a 23-mile sponsored walk from Ashby School to Welford Road, the home of Leicester Tigers.

Enrico Schoeman and Andre de Kock riders claim fiery Guinness World Record

Enrico Schoeman and Andre de Kock ride their Kawasaki sidecar combination through a tunnel of fire to set a new Guinness Book of World Records mark of 67.9 metres.

Two South African stuntmen have claimed a new world record at the Tarlton International Raceway near Krugersdorp.

On Monday night Enrico Schoeman and Andre de Kock powered their modified Kawasaki Z1000 motorcycle-sidecar combination through a 67.6m inferno to snatch the record for driving through a tunnel of fire from American stuntman Clint Ewing, who set the previous mark of 60,96m riding solo on a Suzuki superbike in Los Angeles on January 27, 2008.

The spectacular attempt, deemed too dangerous to be held at various public venues by Ekurhuleni health and safety officials, went off without a hitch. Once the diesel and petrol-soaked cardboard and steel structure was ignited by a pyrotechnics expert, there was a small window of opportunity for the pair to make it through. Guiness World Record rules require the entire tunnel to be burning from the time of entry to the time of exit.

With the flames reducing visibility inside the tunnel to almost zero, professional photographer Schoeman had to remain focused on a white line drawn down the middle of the inferno to keep the three-wheeled racing machine from smashing through the flaming walls with devastating consequences.

The crowd held their breath for several seconds while all that could be heard from within the crackling tunnel was the reassuring scream of the Kawasaki’s engine. Then, to a roar of approval, they blasted out the other side in a shower of sparks.

A victory “doughnut” added a last puff of smoke before the relieved pair punched the air in victory. When asked what it was like, motorsport journalist De Kock said it was “hot”. Still limping from a severe burn sustained while preparing for the event, De Kock went on to say he could have “held on a bit longer”.

Boys & Girls Club seeks jumping jack Guinness World Record

The clock hit 6:30p and Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide simultaneously hopped-to.

At the Red Bank chapter, on Drs. James Parker Boulevard, unit director Shniece Perry was slightly tentative.

About a dozen of the club’s members had just finished practicing a timed run of jumping jacks, readying for the early evening attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the most people doing simultaneous jumping jacks across multiple venues.

“They just did a little practice run to see how long two minutes is,” Perry said. “We hope that they last.”

In the one that counted, one girl called uncle with about 30 seconds to go, while the rest kept with the clock in hopes of breaking the record.

It’s yet to be seen whether the national organization will make it into the books. Perry took a roll of all who participated and will submit the information to the Boys and Girls Club.

The two minutes flew by with a little motivation from Perry and club employee Aaron Styles, who put out the rallying cry, “jumping jacks, jumping jacks, who can do jumping jacks?”

“Me, me, me, me,” the kids responded.

Then time was up, and the kids went limp and exhaled.

“That shows you’ve got what it takes to be healthy and stay on top,” Styles said. “Remember this: you be great.”

World’s longest bunting break world record

World’s longest bunting, Jim Dobbin bunting world record, World’s longest bunting 2011, longest bunting in the world, 2011 World’s longest bunting

Jim Dobbin MP for Heywood and Middleton has joined Fairtrade Ambassador and five time Olympic gold medallist, Sir Steve Redgrave, in Parliament in a bid to break the record for the world’s longest bunting.

The world record attempt is to mark this year’s Fairtrade Fortnight and to highlight the Fairtrade Foundation’s ‘Great Cotton Stitch-Up’ campaign - a drive to end unfair European cotton subsidies.

West African cotton producers are some of the poorest farmers on the planet and yet, last year, had to compete with EU farmers who received over £600m in subsidies - the equivalent to Estonia’s entire EU contribution.

The record for the world’s longest bunting is currently 2,986 metres. Fairtrade campaigners and supporters around the country are aiming to reach at least 4,350 metres – over two and a half miles!

The final bunting will be displayed on World Fairtrade Day, 14 May.

Mr Dobbin said: “It is scandalous that West African farmers who earn less than $1 a day cannot use their farming skills to trade their way out of poverty. From the amount of Fairtrade goods on our local shop, I know trade justice is something residents really care about; therefore I am proud to be backing Fairtrade this Fortnight and their bid to break the bunting record.

“Behind this campaign is a serious message to end unfair European cotton subsidies and to make trade fair. That’s why I am supporting this bid, so we can help some poorest cotton farmers in the world make a decent living from their work.’

Sir Steve Redgrave added: “I am delighted that Jim Dobbin MP is backing Fairtrade’s campaign. I have visited West African cotton farmers in Mali and I have seen how hard it is make a living from cotton already. Farmers there are not asking for a handout, just a level playing field so they can improve their families and communities through hard work.

“Working together we can end these subsidies and make their live just a little bit easier.”

World’s fastest bowler - Shoaib Akhtar announces retirement

COLOMBO: The world’s fastest bowler Shoaib Akhtar announced on Thursday to end his international cricketing career which was filled with glory, controversies and injuries.

He made the announcement while addressing a press conference at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Neither coach Waqar Younis nor manager Intikhab Alam accompanied him as he wasn’t even wearing national colours.

Wearing a black jacket, Shoaib Akhtar, 35, looked emotional when he heralded his departure from international cricket.

He said, “This is the most significant part of my life as I have decided to call it a day…this world cup is my last one and would be the last of my international career”.
Shoaib Akhtar announces retirement, World’s fastest bowler, fastest bowler in the world 2011

He said he is available to the team management if they want him to utilise in the remaining matches of the mega event.

“I certainly wanted to continue but now I feel I should make a space for youngsters to come forward and perform for Pakistan”, he added.

“With heavy heart, I gonna take my retirement from ODIs, and I have no regrets whatsoever. I really thought I would make another time”, he stated.

“I would love to enjoy my family life and want to spend the rest of my life with my mom, dad, sister and brothers who have supported me a lot during my career. I took the decision after discussing with my family and they advised me to retire now”, Shoaib said.

“I’m happy that I never had no allegations like spot fixing or match fixing during my whole career”, he mentioned.

He said if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) required his services, he would train the upcoming fast bowlers and keep giving tips to the budding talent that Pakistan always has.

He further stated that he had already made up his mind before the World Cup and is formally announcing the decision with the media.

“My dream to play for Pakistan came true and I wanna thank all of them who been supporting and loving me from the bottom of my heart”, Shoaib said before leaving the stage.

Earlier, in the day, Shoaib Akhtar told his team-mates about his decision before the start of the practice session at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. He delivered an emotional farewell speech during which he also thanked his mates for supporting me to the end of his career. Following his speech, players embraced him and showed their gratitude to the fastest bowler in the world.

Shoaib Akhtar started his career in 1996 but had to face controversies right from the start after he was dropped for Sahara Cup matches.

He made his Test debut in November 1997 against West Indies in Rawalpindi, his home ground, during which he took two wickets under the captaincy of Aamir Sohail.

Shoaib got the real recognition when he silenced over 100000 Indian fans in Eden Gardens Kolkata when he decimated the stumps of Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar on two consecutive balls.

The fast bowler never looked back after that and kept performing for Pakistan but at the same time had to face allegations of chucking, which he cleared in 2000.

However, the controversy again resurfaced in Pakistan’s tour to New Zealand in 2001 when Steve Dunn and Doug Cowie once again called his action, following which University of Western Australia’s report suggested his action looks jerky due to unique physical characteristics.

Injuries and infighting with co-players as well as coach Bob Woolmer once again took his off the limelight but he then came back remarkably as a hero to dismantle an Ashes winning England in home series on dead pitches. He took 17 wickets during the three test series but injured his ankle in the final test at Lahore.

During the just over 13 years international career, Shoaib Akhtar underwent four surgeries which eventually got the better of him and he finally called it a day during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 on Thursday in the Sri Lankan capital.

Longest Journey by Motorcycle in a Single Country set Guinness World Record by Colin and Ryan Pyle

Longest Journey by Motorcycle in a Single Country set Guinness World Record by Colin and Ryan Pyle.

On March 9th, 2011 Canadian brothers Colin and Ryan Pyle received a confirmation by the Guinness World Records that they had indeed set a World Record for their motorcycle journey around China. According to the Guinness World Records the name of the record they received was for the "Longest Journey by Motorcycle in a Single Country".

Canadian brothers Colin and Ryan Pyle completed their epic motorcycle journey by returning back to Shanghai on Sunday October 17th, 2010, after 65 days on the road circumnavigating China on their BMW F800GS motorcycles. Their journey was a unique one, as they have become the first riders to fully circumnavigate China by motorcycle in one single journey. During their remarkable 17,674km odyssey the brothers have encountered some of the most intense changes in culture, weather, altitude and terrain that exist in the world. They tackled heavy rains, flooding, landslides, freak hailstorms, extreme altitude (above 5000m/16,000ft), sand, gravel, thousands of kilometers of road construction and even bureaucratic / military interference.

Colin and Ryan intend to produce both a documentary film and a written book on their experiences in China, which have been far from regular. Galatasaray may have lost the Spor Toto Super League derby game 2-1 to Fenerbahçe, but its supporters made history anyway, breaking the record for “loudest sport event” during the match, the Istanbul club has announced.

Friday’s Istanbul football derby was monitored by a team of the Guinness World Records, who made measurements of the level of noise made by the 50,000-strong crowd at Türk Telekom Arena.

It was reported that three measurements would be made on Friday, one 10 minutes before the kick-off (at 8:50 p.m.) and then three and 15 minutes after the start of the game.

At half time, it was reported that Galatasaray fans had reached 131.76 decibels, which was enough to pass the previous mark of 128.7 decibels reached during a National Football League game between the Denver Broncos and the New England Patriots at Mile High Stadium in Denver, Colorado.

Kelly Gneiting, a hospital statistician and sumo wrestler from Arizona, will secure the official world record if he completes the Los Angeles marathon in California on Sunday.

Mr Gneiting, 40, said he wanted to run the 26-mile race as an inspiration to "people who are overweight, have low self-esteem and think they can't achieve things".

"I have high self-esteem and believe I can do anything," he told the Daily Telegraph. "I'm big, but I feel like I have a talent for this." Mr Gneiting, who is originally from Idaho, is 6ft tall and has a 5ft waist. He is a three-time American sumo champion and has represented the US at the world championships.

He said that his size made running uncomfortable. "It's hard on my feet, my thighs and under my armpits," he said. He plans to wear slick black Lycra leggings to prevent friction.

Mr Gneiting took up wrestling as a young man of average size, but began to gain weight. "Food is a bit of a weakness," he said.

After exceeding the 265-pound limit for regular wrestlers, he started sumo.

He completed the LA marathon in 2008 but was not in contact with the Guinness World Record authorities. They stipulate that he must be filmed for the entire race and weighed before and after.

The current record for the heaviest marathon runner is just under 20 stone.

Mr Gneiting, who last time took 11 hours, 45 minutes, is aiming to finish in less than nine hours.

"I'm going to run as fast as I can," he said. "So I can show all my critics".

Among the jokes were Whitehall’s quip: “I was looking forward to today - after all it’s the only gig where people can’t walk out. If you want to heckle you’ll have to press the call button.”

BA has raised a total of over £700,000 for Comic Relief since its partnership began in June 2010. This year’s Red Nose Day takes place on Friday March 18.

Coverage of the record-breaking gig will be posted at youtube.com/britishairways, and BA has also painted seevral of its aircraft with red noses to mark this year’s event.

The astronomer Richard Nolle coined the term "Super Moon" which means a new or full moon at 90% or greater of its closest perigee to Earth. Well on March 19th the moon will be at perigee (its closest position in its orbit to Earth). This will be the closest perigee in 18 years.

The largest effect will be on the tide which occurs at the full moon every month as the closer to the earth the moon orbits, so the effect on tides increases. A 5% increase in proximity makes about 20% difference in the power the moon exerts so those in coastal regions should anticipate stronger tides.

An extreme "SuperMoon" is when the moon is full or new as well as at its 100% greater mean perigee (closest) distance to earth. By this definition, last month's full moon, this month's and next month's will all be extreme "SuperMoons".

Some largely internet-based claims say such events are related to catastrophies such as extreme siesmic events or extreme weather and some coincidential strong events have happened at the same time as Super Moons, however no definitive scientific research has concluded that.

World's Youngest CEO 2011 - Sindhuja Rajaraman 14 Years Old Girl set World Record

Have you ever heard of a CEO, who is only 14 years old? Well here is a 14 years old girl, who loves to play like other kids, but she chooses to play with animation. Sindhuja Rajaraman, the ninth standard girl,CEO of Seppan, launched her Chennai based animation company in October 2010. She is the youngest digital caricaturist certified by Corel Corporation, India, fastest 2D animator in the country certified by Nasscom Animation and Gaming Conclave, 2010.

Well, she had also made a Guinness Book record attempt for the fastest animation film. The film was on Exnora, a Chennai based non- profit organization. She made it to mark the occasion of 10-10-2010. She did a three minute animation film in ten hours. Now she is awaiting her results.

Talking about how she got into the animation profession, she said "It all started five years back when I wanted to take my mind off studies and do something new. My father, who is a cartoonist, instilled in me the passion to do animation and taught me the entire process. I have tried my luck with animation even before I started learning it professionally. I did my first mini animation project when I was in sixth standard. It was on 'do not disturb animals'."

She got a offer from First Planet to work as Seppan's chief executive when she didn't even know the meaning of CEO, and now she is handling three projects, Virtual Street, Garbo.in and First Planet.

Kumaran Mani, her mentor, who helped her with the setting up of Seppan, says, "Initially she was a little uncomfortable being a CEO. But now she has learnt the tricks of the trade. When she meets a client she immediately shakes hands, collects their cards and neatly puts it in her folder."

In Seppan, there are ten people working and they will be adding more people when needed. Sindhuja added in a positive way that she is the only CEO who is paid less than her employees.

Her colleagues, who are older than her, mentioned that she is very creative and they have learned lot from her.

Software lobby Nasscom's regional director for Chennai, K Purushothaman said "Sindhuja is very passionate and committed in what she is doing. She has mastered the domestic animation skills. Now she has to sharpen her knowledge and skills on what's happening in the international market."

Though she gets offers from other big corporate companies, she has not shown any keen interest in joining them. She wants to live a normal life like any other 14 year old girl.

She aims to study at the Vancouver Film School in Canada and would like to specialize in animation.Sindhuja dreams that when she is 20 year old,Seppan would be a company with a turnover of one crore.
