Two Kenyan companies have entered the Guinness Book of World Records for hosting the largest number of people washing their hands at a single venue.

Unilever Kenya through its brand Lifebuoy and Ecotact Kenya, which helped organise the event, received the Guinness World Record certification after they beat the record held by India’s Lifebuoy.

The firms brought together 19,352 people to wash hands with soap at Thirime Primary School in Kikuyu constituency, a move that saw them surpass the 15,115 people Unilever India gathered in 2009.

“We called upon all school children, teachers, friends and families to pledge towards hand washing with soap,” said Margaret Mwaura, brand building director at Unilever Kenya, which has used the hand washing campaign to push their products in the market place.

Campaign

Lifebuoy dominated Kenya’s toilet soaps market for nearly three decades before it was overtaken by competitors such as Dettol.

Unilever has rolled out a Sh50 million budget to re-position its new-look Lifebuoy brand that is now targeting much younger consumers with active lifestyles, including women.

But its rivals including Reckitt Benckiser, and Procter & Gamble, have also revamped their product lines and embarked on marketing campaigns to expand their share of the soap market.

Largest Guanyin Carved Ruby in Thailand set world record by Monkarn Dhanajira.

“In Thailand, there are so few raw ruby substance left. About 80% of digged up ruby from all over the world are imported to Thailand to increase values by polishing , cutting, or carving neatly and exported as ornaments eventually. Gem experts have criteria to examine its quality by checking its material, colour, grade and purify. Because of high technology, experts can excamine even its age, substance details and sources. They can specify natural ruby from synthetic ones. Anyway, most people are willing to pay for the natural ones rather than the imitations.

Surprising enough, there are so many red shades of ruby such as birds’ blood red, sunrise red, lotus bloom red etc.

To write all these knowledgeable is just to link you to this special ruby carved in 1000 hands Guanyin form. It is not just an ordinary uncut ruby but a beautiful carved ruby which is intent to make a new world record for the largest carved ruby in this planet. The owner of this 17,831 carats purplish red ruby is Mrs. Monkarn Kongyoo. Her father bought it from Chantaburi and passed it on to her.

She had kept this large raw huge ruby for many years. After that she decided to carve it but had not found the design and model yet. She had spent about 5 years to discover the exact and suitable image for this precious stone and another more than 3 years to find the right and specialised craftsman at Thongtawee Carving Manufactory to create this beautiful sculpture.

The reason why she decides to make the new world record is to announce and make a history for her family and let the world know about the skill of thai craftsmen. This is to show that the master piece of unique largest carved ruby of the world is in Thailand! She would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Wilawan Atichat, the Director of GIT, for her helpful support to make this record attempt successfully on 15th July, 2010.

Her rapidly growing assets are all down Chelsea’s now widely illegal polypropylene string implants.

The implants consist of a coil of polypropylene inserted into each breast. There is no silicone or saline implant.

The “string” irritates the internal breast tissue, which causes the boobs in question to produce a natural serum.

This fluid gets absorbed by the implant, which then swells, grows and irritates the tissue further, causing continuous breast growth.

Each of the 34-year-old’s 65ins breasts weigh two stone and together contain 12 litres of fluid.

She said: “I call them Itsy and Bitsy.

“I didn’t set out to have the world’s biggest boobs, but, well, they do have a mind of their own. Fortunately, they pay their way.”

As her breasts are continually growing, Chelsea has to splash out hundreds of pounds for specially made bras every two months.

Sunswift IVy - World's Fastest Solar Powered Car set Guinness World Record 2011

World's Fastest Solar Powered Car set Guinness World Record 2011.

A new world record was set yesterday as the students of The University of New South Wales managed to design and build the fastest solar powered car yet.

Achieving a high speed of a little over 88 km/h (54 miles/h), the UNSW's Sunswift IVy, powered only by silicon solar cells significantly topped the previous 1987 record of 79 km/h and was quick to make it into the Guinness World Book of Records.

The new record was set at 10:32 on the 7th of January at the HMAS Albatross navy base airstrip in Nowra. The Sunswift IVy, weighting only 1/10th of the weight of an average car and equipped with a 98% efficient Brushless CSIRO 3 phase DC motor needs just 1300 watts of solar generated power to achieve it's estimated average speed of 85 km/h. That's approximately the same amount of energy a toaster needs for toasting two pieces of bread.

The drivers for this world record successful attempt were Barton Mawer and Craig Davis, professional racing drivers from the electric car firm Tesla European Operations. "We were confident. We only needed a little bit of sunshine and that was enough," declared Barton Mawer after the event.

The UNSW students invested 18 months in the 280.000$ Ivy project and the result will hopefully "spur a lot more interest in solar energy and the debate about renewable energy technology", said Daniel Friedman, Sunswift's project manager.

China's Jin Songhao reportedly endured a freezing-cold ice bath for two hours -- potentially setting a new world record for direct, full-body contact with ice.

Jin took the title by lasting 120 minutes in a plastic box filled with ice cubes, according to Xinhua and Global Times. Guinness World Records officials in New York City told AOL News that they have not yet received any documentation of the 54-year-old's world record attempt, meaning they cannot confirm it.

Current Guinness World Record holder Chen Kecai of China competed alongside Jin in Monday's contest in China's Hunan province. Kecai reportedly lasted 118 minutes, besting his record-setting 2010 showing by 10 minutes.

But officials pulled Chen out of the box when monitoring devices showed the 53-year-old's body temperature falling, according to ITN News.

Both competitors outlasted Dutch citizen Wim Hof, who in a separate event held in Hong Kong reportedly managed to stay in an icy bath for 115 minutes earlier this week.

World’s longest sea bridge 2011 - Qingdao Haiwan Bridge, China

China has unveiled the world’s longest sea bridge, which stretches a massive 26.4 miles – five miles further than the distance between Dover and Calais and longer than a marathon.

The Qingdao Haiwan Bridge, completed earlier this week, links the main urban area of Qingdao city, East China’s Shandong province, with Huangdao district, straddling the Jiaozhou Bay sea areas.

World’s longest sea bridge 2011 - Qingdao Haiwan Bridge, China

The road bridge, which took four years and cost a cool £5.5billion to build, will be open for use in the New Year and is almost three miles longer than the previous record-holder, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in Louisiana.

That structure features two bridges running side by side and is 23.87 miles (38.42km) long.

The three-way Qingdao Haiwan Bridge is a staggering 174 times longer than London’s Tower Bridge, over the Thames River – and shaves 19 miles off the drive from Qingdao to Huangdao.

Two separate groups of workers have been building the different ends of the structure since 2006.

One engineer commented: ‘The computer models and calculations are all very well but you can't really relax until the two sides are bolted together.

‘Even a few centimetres out would have been a disaster.’

With an overall length of 42.58km, the route between Qingdao and Huangdao will be shortened by 30km, cutting the travel time by about 20 minutes.

However, the colossal construction is set to hold the record as the longest sea bridge only for a few years – and it will be bettered by another Chinese bridge in the next decade.

Last December officials announced workers had begun constructing a bridge to link southern Guangdong province with Hong Kong and Macau.
