In the ongoing Asian Games 2010, Gymnast Ashish Kumar has created a history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to win a medal in the Asian Games. Ashish opened a new chapter for India in Gymnastics, when he bagged a bronze in the men’s floor event on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old, Ashish Kumar bagged the bronze with an aggregate score of 14.92 behind gold winner Chenglong Zhang of China (15.40) and South Korean Soo Myun Kim, who won the silver (15.40).

“I am very happy because it is the first gymnastics medal in the history of Indian gymnastics (at the Asian Games),” said Kumar. In the CWG 2010, Kumar also became the first gymnast from the country to win a medal in the Commonwealth Games, where he won a silver in men’s vault and a bronze in men’s floor.

Veerdhawal Khade broke the swimming medal drought after 24 years when he wins bronze in 50m men’s butterly. Khade finished third in the 50m butterfly finals with a timing of 24.31sec. Harika Dronavalli also clinched a bronze in the women’s individual chess.

As of now, India’s medals tally rose to one gold, four silver and six bronze. Despite medals in these disciplines, India slipped to the ninth position in the medals table followed by disappointing performances in other disciplines.

In the Doha Asian Games in 2006, India had finished tenth on the medal’s tally with ten gold, 17 silver and 26 bronze medals.
