Dubai Outlet Mall - World's longest line of sandwiches set Guinness World Record 2011

Dubai -- Already home to records such as the world's tallest tower and the world's largest sea shell mosaic, Dubai can now add to its books the world's longest line of sandwiches.

A 2,667 metre line of 11,000 cheese, tomato, cucumber and olive baguettes was made at Dubai Outlet Mall yesterday.

From 8am, Kraft Foods Middle East staff worked in teams to get the food prepared. The sandwiches, along with some other snacks, were later distributed by Kraft and the UAE Red Crescent to needy families and 6,000 labourers at Sonapur, Jebel Ali and Al Quoz labour camps.

"We are one of the biggest food companies in the world and are committed to giving back to the community," said Vishal Tikku, managing director, Saudi Arabia and Middle East shared services, Kraft Foods.

"Throughout this week, every year, we encourage our employees to give up their time."

Mr Tikku said the company had, at first, planned to buy 10,000 sandwiches and distribute them but then decided, given its line of produce, that Kraft should try to make the sandwiches from scratch.

"We wanted to make meals and give back to the less fortunate in society," he said.

"We thought the record would generate a bit of coverage for the issue of hunger, and it had more credibility than just giving away 10,000 sandwiches."

More than half a tonne of cream cheese was used in the process. By lunchtime, the baguettes had been lined out in three rows across tables snaked around the mall so that Guinness World Records' adjudications executive Elizabeth Smith could verify the record. The rows were measured by Abdul Kalam, a surveyor at Ajman-based Falcon Survey Engineering.

"There must be a continuous line of sandwiches," Ms Smith said.

"They cannot be more than 50 centimetres in length and there must be at least two ingredients and the bread must be buttered or have some form of spread."

The previous record, according to the Guinness World Records website, was 3,000 sandwiches measuring 1,378.34 metres. The previous record was set in Piove di Sacco, Padova, Italy in the Centro Commerciale Piazzagrande.

Sivaraman's famous painting Pieta set Guinness World Record 2011

Artist Sivaraman's work brings together the famous painting and the New Testament

Michelangelo's masterpiece Pieta, which shows a crucified Christ cradled in his mother's lap, has tugged at people's heartstrings for centuries.

And, artist R. Sivaraman from Nagercoil has paid a fitting tribute to this famous Renaissance painting — he has reproduced Pieta within a 5 x 3-foot frame, and written in miniscule letters the entire New Testament and a few selections from the Old Testament over the sketch and the empty spaces around it.

On the verge of completion, the work is likely to get into the Guinness World Records book.

Running words defining the cuts and contours of images is a special feature of this work, bordered by sketched scenes from Christ's life. Nothing but lead pencils have been used for all the sketching and writing.

Well protected

Despite this, Sivaraman's work is insulated against damage.

“A chemical applied over the finished work preserves it,” says 24-year-old Sivaraman, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Government College of Fine Arts.

“When I joined the college, I wanted to do something extraordinary,” says Sivaraman. And, that is how he started inscribing popular writings with images of those who authored them.

His other ‘book-sketching' attempts include writing the Tamil version of the New Testament within a reproduced Pieta (an effort mentioned in the Limca Book of World Records), and former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's autobiography within his image.

Inscribing a whole book in miniscule letters within an image set in a small frame takes its toll, especially on his knees.

However, Sivaraman puts in nine hours daily for this work — he believes the toil is well worth it.

The floor was shaking at the new Ravenscraig sports centre when over 800 keep-fit fanatics smashed a world record on Sunday.

Thousands of people visited the state-of-the-art complex over its opening weekend and the highlight was the world’s biggest Zumba class.

No fewer than 836 people danced their way into the record books, smashing the previous record of a Canadian university by almost 300 participants.

Melanie Menzies, Health and Fitness Manager with North Lanarkshire Leisure, who organised the event, said: “The whole place was absolutely buzzing.”

The event was attended by two independent adjudicators and now awaits official verification from the Guinness Book of Records to confirm that the world record has been broken.

Zumba is a cross between aerobics and Latin dance. It fuses hypnotic rhythms and easy-to-follow moves in a fun environment.

Blane Dodds, Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure, added: “We’re thrilled and delighted to have marked the opening of this fabulous new facility by breaking a world record. We’re now hoping to break the world record for the biggest fitness class ever.”

Events at Ravenscraig continue during the October school break. There will be a family fun day on October 14 (1-5pm).

CWG 2010 - Gagan Narang outshines Bindra, Omkar takes gold air rifle event in New Delhi

Gagan Narang exults after winning the gold medal in the men's 10 metre air rifle event in New Delhi.

It was a fight against the self for Gagan Narang as he clinched the air rifle gold by bettering his own World record with a total of 703.6, and incidentally beat the Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra by a mile, as shooting added three more gold and three more silver medals to India's collection in the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.

Starting with a World record score of 600, Narang shot 103.6 in the final to improve the final World record by 0.1 point.

The records may not be ratified as the ISSF accepts World records set only in the Olympics, World championships, World Cups and Continental championships.

In what was tipped to be a battle of the giants, Bindra was unable to match Narang's searing form.

‘Par excellence'

“Gagan is outstanding, a shooter par excellence. I have no doubt in my mind that he will win the World championship and the Olympic medal some day,” said Bindra, even as he expressed happiness about his own fighting performance.

“I was trying to get into my shooting shoes, when Abhinav was already established.

“Shooting is an individual sport, and you fight against yourself. We enjoy good relations and have a lot to learn from each other,” said Narang, who has four more events to focus in the Games.

Omkar Singh was a class act in the 50-metre free pistol event, as he overcame a deficit of one point against Bin Gai of Singapore in the qualification phase, to eventually outclass him by four points.

Training with Satendra Kumar in Coimbatore, the 26-year-old Omkar compensated for the silver in the pairs event the previous day.

A silver medallist in air pistol in the World Cup in Sydney this year, Omkar will have a chance to add two more medals in air pistol.

Anisa Sayyed looked to have preserved her best for the individual event in sport pistol as she beat compatriot Rahi Sarnobat, the heroine of the pairs event, by 5.8 points for the gold.

“I was dreaming about this. We had trained hard in the camp. We need to work harder to qualify for the Olympics. The next target is the Asian Games,” said Anisa.

The World record holders Ronjan Sodhi (95) and Asher Noria (93) lost the double trap pairs gold by one point to the Englishmen despite a classy fare.

Both Ronjan and Asher missed the last bird, but said that it was more a technical issue, than a matter of pressure.

The Englishmen were delighted.

“We are chuffed. We had felt a lot of pressure especially after Ronjan shot 50. I thank Walton for shooting better than me,” said Steven Scott, who shot 93 compared to 96 by Walton which fetched the duo the Games record at 189.

The Australians led by world and Olympic champion Russell Mark were beaten to the bronze by the Malaysians.

The Indian shooters took their tally to five gold and five silver medals from the Karni Singh range in Tughlakabad.
