Modu - World’s lightest smallest mobile phone set Guinness World Record

Modu has finally released its Modu 1 handset in the UK, a device which is recognised by Guinness World Records as the lightest phone on the planet.

After years of it being fashionable to have the smallest cellphone possible, the recent trend has been more for ever-larger touchscreen handsets. But one company is bucking that trend with what it calls the world’s smallest phone.

The Israeli-made Modu 1 earned accreditation for that claim from Guinness World Records in 2008. It’s now commercially available, making its major market debut in the United Kingdom.

The handset is 71.1 x 37.6 x 7.8 mm (2.8 x 1.5 x 0.3 inches) and weighs 43g. To put that into context, it’s roughly the size of a stack of 10 credit cards and actually weighs slightly less.

The size is the only real selling point. It does have several features which are impressive given its size, such as 2GB of on-board storage and an MP3 player, but most of its features are things you’d expect from even the cheapest phone. There’s a 1.3 inch screen, which takes up about 40% of the front of the handset.

The Modu 1, however, isn’t cheap. It’s sold SIM-free and unlocked and launches at £129.99 (a hair under US$200). There are also a range of clip-on decorative jackets which start at around £30 ($50).

As well as announcing the sales launch of the Modu 1, the manufacturers announced its working on the Modu T which runs along the same lines but with a 1.6 inch touchscreen, which should make it the smallest touchscreen phone on the market. Unlike the Modu 1, the jackets will add extra functions such as a camera or a digital photo frame, though goodness only know who’d want the latter with such a tiny device.

It’s tough to see why anyone would actually want to buy one of these. The best I can come up with is that it might do for somebody who is happy enough with their Wi-Fi availability to get an iPod touch rather than an iPhone, but still wants basic phone capabilities. Still, two hundred bucks is a lot of money to save a few centimeters of pocket space.

Texas Lottery jackpots Winner 2010 - Luckiest women in the world

The odds that Joan Ginther would hit four Texas Lottery jackpots for a combined $21 million are astronomical.Mathematicians say the chances are as slim as 1 in 18 septillion — that's 18 and 24 zeros.

Just as unlikely? Getting to know one of the luckiest women in the world.
World's Luckiest Lottery Winner 2010, Texas Woman Wins Lottery Four Times, jackpots Winner 2010,
"She wants her privacy," friend Cris Carmona said.
On a $50 scratch-off ticket bought in this rural farming community, Ginther won $10 million last month in her biggest windfall yet.
But it was the fourth winning ticket in Texas for the 63-year-old former college professor since 1993, when Ginther split an $11 million jackpot and became the most famous native in Bishop history.
But she's a celebrity who few in this town of 3,300 people can say much about.

"That lady is pretty much scarce to everybody," said Lucas Ray Cruz, Ginther's former neighbour. "That's just the way she is."
At the Times Market where Ginther bought her last two winning tickets, the highway gas station is fast becoming a pilgrimage for unlucky lottery losers. Lines stretch deep past a $5.98 bin of Mexican movie DVDs, and a woman from Rhode Island called last week asking to buy tickets from the charmed store through the mail.
She was told that was illegal. The woman called back to plead again anyway.

The Texas Lottery Commission has seen repeat winners before, but none on the scale of Ginther. Spokesman Bobby Heith said the agency has never investigated Ginther's winnings — three scratch-off tickets and one lottery draw — for possible fraud but described the verification system as thorough.

So how did Ginther do it, then?  Good luck pinning her down to ask.
Ginther has never spoken publicly about her lotto winnings and could not be found for comment. She now lives in Las Vegas after moving away from Bishop, and an answering machine message for a telephone number listed at her address says not to leave a message.
She asked the few people who've exchanged more than brief pleasantries with her not to grant interviews and sneaked into lottery headquarters in Austin to collect her winnings with the least publicity the state offers jackpot winners.

But spend a few hours in her hometown — and equal time scouring public records — and a contrasting profile emerges.
Her home address in Las Vegas is on a street called Paradise Drive. When USA Today asked readers in 2000 to sound off on airline service, Ginther groaned over a flight attendant who carted away her cheese and crackers and a sundae too soon. Two years later, she grumbled to the Las Vegas Review-Journal about a proposed monorail running through her exclusive condominium towers.

"I moved here because I wanted to have a beautiful home with a great view and that's what I have. I didn't expect to have a monorail come down here with thousands of tourists every day," Ginther told the newspaper, in what might have been the only time she was directly quoted in the media.

Nitpicking first-class service, and mad the view in her luxury home might be spoiled?
Bishop residents may not know much about Ginther — but they know that's not her.

Here around the cotton farms and boarded-up downtown, Ginther, who over the years regularly visited the town to see her father who died in 2007, is called benevolent as much as she's called lucky. They say she bought the church a van. Gave money to the family that runs the Days Inn off the highway. When she moved, she donated her home to charity.

Sun Bae, who owns the Time Market and sold Ginther her last two winning tickets, said she drives around in a bland Nissan sedan but once bought a nicer car for someone down on their luck. Bae said Ginther doesn't even own a cellphone.
"She is a very generous woman. She's helped so many people," Bae said of Ginther, who .

Calculating the actual odds of Ginther hitting four multimillion-dollar lottery jackpots is tricky. If Ginther's winning tickets were the only four she ever bought, the odds would be one in 18 septillion, according to Sandy Norman and Eduardo Duenez, math professors at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Exactly how often Ginther plays is unknown. But Norman and Duenez said that a habitual player winning four times over a 17-year span is much less far-fetched.

At the Times Market, Bae and store regular Gloria Gonzalez said they've certainly watched Ginther buy her share of tickets over the years. And not just for her.

Gonzalez said when her elderly father would sit at the store's window booth and scrub through dollar scratch-offs, Ginther would surprise him with a $50 ream of tickets.

"Win, win, win," Ginther would chant, rooting him on.
After all, the only way to win is to keep playing. Ginther is smart enough to know that's how you beat the odds: she earned her doctorate from Stanford University in 1976, then spent a decade on faculty at several colleges in California.

"I love you guys so much," she said in a video. "Thank you so much for all of your love and your support, and for sticking by me," she added.

The group, which gauges online popularity, said Lady Gaga was the most popular living musician online according to her following on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The singer gained more than 1.9m fans alone last month and averages approximately 140,000 new fans each day.

She is ahead of other living musicians such as Britney Spears (3.1 million) and Taylor Swift (5.8 million).

However, Lady Gaga is still behind Michael Jackson, the late King of Pop who died last year. He has almost 15m fans.

World Largest Tea Caddies Collection Set Guinness Record - Graham Brooks

Mr Brooks' collection is on public display at the Blenheim Club to raise money for Alzheimer New Zealand.

he has collected tea caddies since his mother-in-law gave him a Jackson's of Piccadilly tea canister for his birthday during his first year of marriage.

Friends and family followed her lead, and the collection had grown to the point he had no idea how many he had.

While he and his family had stored tea in some of the caddies, others were stacked in the "chook house", he said.

"I really don't know what we are going to do with them after this. Does anyone have any ideas?" he said.

Mr Brooks submitted his claim to Guinness World Records six weeks ago. The exact number of tea caddies has been counted as the canisters were displayed, but it remains a secret to allow a "guess the number" competition to run through the exhibition.

Blenheim-raised antique dealer Peter Wedde, of TV One's Auction House programme, was the guest speaker, regaling the crowd with his memories of growing up in Blenheim, ending on the poignant reflection of how important memories were and how terrible it would be to lose them through Alzheimer's disease.

The collection can be viewed from today to July 18. Entry costs $2, or $7 with tea and a lamington.

Antisa Khvichava - Oldest Women in the world 2010

The authorities in the republic of Georgia have announced that a woman called Antisa Khvichava from their country is the oldest person in the world now. The lady has celebrated her 130th birthday on July 8 at her home in a remote mountain village.

The 130 year old Antisa Khvichava, who claimed to be the oldest person, was born on 8th July 1880 in western Georgia. The oldest lady lives with her 40 year old grandson. In 1985, Antisa retired from her job as a tea and corn picker, at the age of 85 years.

According to Khvichava, she has always been healthy after working whole life both at home and at the farm. She can speak only in Mingrelian, which is their local language. She needs an interpreter to talk with the foreigners.

During a civil war, which collapsed the Russian Empire, Antisa lost her birth certificate. However, her age was confirmed to be 130 years by two Soviet documents.

Antisa Khvichava’s claim of being the oldest person will be examined by the Gerontology Research Group. If this is confirmed, she will replace Eugenie Blanchard of France, who is now officially the oldest person in the world at 114 years.

The same type of claim was made by the northern Kazakhstan officials last year. They claimed to possess documents to prove Sakhan Dosova of Karaganda to be the oldest person, who celebrated her 130th birthday on March 27, 2009. In addition, the provided an authentic passport to prove that she was actually born on 1879.

Worlds Largest Open Sandwich set world Record 2010 - Tommy Moore

New Bern barbecue master Tommy Moore achieved a Guinness World Record for the “World’s Largest Open Sandwich” Sunday, a whopping 1,336 pounds after it was heaped high and wide with barbecue and slaw.

Moore’s masterpiece was baked in a specially designed 10-foot-square oven engineered by Glenn Snader.
Official verification paperwork and video was put on its way to Guinness World Record headquarters in London.

A crowd estimated at better than 2,500 formed a ring around the tent that housed the oven and bun at Union Point Park. They cheered loudly as the weight was announced, increasing with the unloading of each tub of barbecue and slaw by a 30-member Bun Crew.

Moore helped smooth the toppings, using a paddle that was about the size of a boat oar.
After the huge sandwich was weighed, the crew began to shovel the ingredients into plates and served portions to everyone in the crowd. Linda Staunch of the New Bern 300th team said 2,000 plates were available and all were used, with hundreds more getting their serving on napkins.
The first people served were military members of the Navy and Marines.
“They serve us every day, so it’s my turn to serve them,” Moore said later.

Gov. Bev Perdue of New Bern was on hand, congratulating Moore with providing a free lunch for the town and making this a great Independence Day in New Bern.

She then pitched in and helped serve trays to the servicemen and later to people in the crowd.
Hector Torres moved to New Bern three months ago from New York and as he finished his barbecue plate, he said Sunday’s event was just another in a series of pleasant experiences he has had in his short time in town.

“It is a wonderful place,” he said. “The people here are so nice, friendly and polite.”
Betty Thomas, who handled the marketing for the world record, said the criteria included that Moore make a sandwich which weighed more than 1,000 pounds and that it be edible.

The bun-making included using 561 pounds of dough made up of 350 pounds of flour, 10 gallons of milk and 17 gallons of water. The 1,015-pound bun cooked for six and a half hours at 300 degrees.

Crews added more than 300 pounds of barbecue and slaw to complete the record sandwich.
Jay Phillips and his daughter Leanne were among the huge throng that surrounded the oven area.
“This is awesome,” he said. “We know Tommy and he’s a first-class guy.”

Moore paid for all the expenses involved in the project, but dedicated the effort to the city of New Bern.
“As I’ve said before, it’s not so much about the brick and mortar that make up the city. It’s about the people,” he said while mingling through the crowd shaking hands and posing for photos. “And the city has the finest people around. Look at all these people who came out to support us today. They are the proof in the pudding of what a great city we have.”

Moore has spent considerable time on the project in recent months, but he won’t be taking today off.
“Oh no, I’ve got to get the oven out of the park and take it to the restaurant,” he said. He plans to leave it on display at his restaurant on U.S. 17.

When Reggie Griffin of New Bern got his plate he had a one-word reaction: “Fantastic.”
“This is an international event, and it’s a great day not only for New Bern and the 300th, but all of Eastern North Carolina,” he added.
