World's oldest person dies - Japanese woman Kama Chinen

TOKYO, May 4 (AFP) - The world's oldest person, Japanese woman Kama Chinen, has died a week short of her 115th birthday after a life spanning three centuries, Guinness World Records said Tuesday.

"Guinness World Records is saddened to learn the news of the death of the oldest living person, Kama Chinen from Japan, who died on May 2, 2010 aged 114 years 357 days," it said.

"Though confined to a wheelchair in her later years, Chinen still enjoyed the wonders of nature and being outside."

Chinen's death hands the title of world's oldest person to Eugenie Blanchard, a 114-year-old French woman living on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, according to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Blanchard was born on February 16, 1896, the group said.

Chinen's reign as the oldest living person began on the death of US woman Gertrude Baines, who passed away in September 2009.

Kyodo News agency, citing the health ministry, said an unidentified 114-year-old woman had died Sunday afternoon on the southern island of Okinawa after being taken to hospital from a nursing home.

Japan has the world's highest life expectancy, according to UN figures, and Okinawa has been home to many centenarians, a fact variously attributed to the healthy diet and environment of the sub-tropical island.

Kyodo said Chiyono Hasegawa, 113, in southern Japan's Saga Prefecture was now the country's oldest person.

World's Smallest Digital Camera 2010 - Chobi Mini Digital Camera

The Chobi Mini Digital Camera from Japan Trust Technologies measures just 1.7 inches by 1.1 inches by less than half an inch and weighs a featherlight half an ounce.

Despite its petite structure, this snapper boasts functions that put it almost on par with cameras from big brands. The Chobi point-and-shoot captures images at 2,048x1,536 pixels and records videos at 1,280x960 resolution, which is considered high-definition by industry standards.

The camera charges via an included USB cable and can be fully juiced in about 120 minutes. Storage is in the form of microSDHC cards.

And guess what? We dug through stacks of cameras and found out that Canon has its own variation! Here's the proof in a picture:

OK, so that was just a USB drive we got at a Canon press event, but we measured it and it's about the same size as the Chobi Mini Digital Camera.

If you're interested, the Chobi can be had for about $148.

World's Largest ever Umbrella Dance set Guinness World Record 2010

Hundreds of people were singing in the rain as they broke the record for the world’s largest ever umbrella dance.
A total of 234 dancers carrying umbrellas met near the centre of Bath, Somerset. Watched by a Guinness World Records adjudicator they then performed a specially choreographed five-minute dance to the song ”Singin’ in the Rain”.
The event, organised by Bath International Dance Festival, smashed the previous world record.
BIDF Director James Whitehead said: ”It has taken over six months of exceptionally hard work to allow us to run this very special activity.
”This year’s record attempt symbolises our ethos to encourage participation in dance and bring people together.
”Being a World Record holder is fantastic achievement.”

Leonid Stadnyk Tallest man in the World - Guinness World Records 2010

A Ukrainian man has been named the world's tallest living person by the Guinness Book of Records, beating the previous record holder by 22cm (8in).

A Ukrainian man has been named the world's tallest living person by the Guinness Book of Records, beating the previous record holder by 22cm (8in).

Leonid Stadnyk, a 37-year-old former veterinarian from Podolyantsi in central Ukraine, was measured at 2.57m (8ft 5in), the records authority said

Mr Stadnyk has claimed to be the world's tallest man before, but his record was not verified because he repeatedly refused to be measured by the Guinness Book of Records.

He began to grow rapidly aged 14, when an operation on his brain reportedly stimulated his pituitary gland.

Born to parents who were 1.73m (5ft 8in) and 1.52m (5ft) tall in a tiny village 209km (130 miles) west of the capital, Kiev, Mr Stadnyk was not unusually large as a young boy.

Mr Stadnyk had to give up his job six years ago, after his feet were frostbitten because he could not afford proper shoes for his size 64 feet.

He soon outgrew his bike and began taking the bus. He later became too large for the bus and had to use the family's horse-drawn cart.

By the time he had qualified as a vet and begun working at a clinic an hour away, Mr Stadnyk measured 2.03m (6ft 8in).

But Mr Stadnyk still has 15cm (6in) to grow if he is to match the tallest man in history.

He now tends to his mother's livestock and grows vegetables on their farm in Podolyantsi.
