Guinness World Records announced Wednesday that Miami University officially broke the world record for the most couples renewing their wedding vows at once. The event took place during alumni weekend on June 20, 2009. The official count is 1,087 couples, breaking the previous record of just 624 couples renewing their wedding vows in Pittsburgh in 2008.

The announcement comes just as Miami is sending out Valentine’s Day cards to 12,606 "Miami Merger" couples, alumni who are married to each other. Of Miami alumni, more than 14 percent are married to each other, believed to be one of the largest numbers of alums-married-to-alums at any university.

Miami set out to break the world record during its bicentennial year (1809-2009) by first recruiting Miami Mergers, then inviting Miami Acquisitions -- alumni married to non-Miamians -- then Miami parents, faculty, staff, friends and the community.

The Merger Moment ceremony, officiated by Oxford Mayor Prue Dana, took place at the Upham Hall arch on campus where it’s fabled that a couple who kisses under the arch will marry. After the ceremony, couples were invited to walk through the arch for a kiss. The ceremony included Miami’s oldest Merger, Robert (’38) and June (’39) Frame of Cincinnati, Miami head basketball coach Charlie Coles (’65) and his wife – whose immediate family includes four Miami Mergers – and former U.S. Senator Mike DeWine (’69) and his wife Frances (’71).

Two Qataris announced on Tuesday they will attempt to set the Guinness World record for the fastest boat crossing between Doha and Abu Dhabi in the UAE.

Sheikh Hassan bin Jabor al-Thani, president of the Qatar Marine Sports Federation, and Abdullah al-Sulaiti will attempt to set a new trans-Gulf speed record next week, depending on weather conditions.

“We are planning to start at 9am Abu Dhabi time and finish here at Doha by 11am. However, we are hoping that the weather does not play spoilsport,” Sheikh Hassan told a press briefing, cited by Gulf Times.

Guinness officials will be present during the 315km crossing to vet its authenticity, the paper reported.

“There will a tracking system on board and people can follow us live on the website as well. You can know the exact position where we are and all that on our official website,” Sheikh Hassan said.

He will attempt the record in a twin gas turbine Nor-Tech boat, called Qatar Challenger.

Corona set a world record for the most marathons walked in a year

Corona set a world record marathons,Corona marathons picture,Corona marathons images, marathons world records 2010

The 51-year-old Corona resident walked 77 marathons last year. Actually, 18 were ultramarathons, longer than 26.2 miles. She walked 65 marathons in 2008. Her personal best: 5 hours, 26 minutes -- faster than a 13-minute mile.

"My goal this year is to do all of them under six hours," Holder said. She described her technique as "a little bit of race walk, a little bit of power walk, a little bit of get-it-done."

It's unclear whether anybody's even established a world record for most marathons walked in a year.

The Guinness World Records 2010 book does not include such a listing; a search of its Web site didn't yield one, either. Guinness officials did not immediately respond to an interview request.

According to Seattle-based running group Marathon Maniacs President Steve Yee and Runner's World magazine, a Texas attorney named Larry Macon holds the Guinness record for the most marathons run in a year, at 105, set in 2008.

Holder has mapped out a schedule making the Las Vegas marathon on Dec. 5 her 100th, but figures she's got time for Honolulu on Dec. 12, Tucson, Dec. 13 and maybe a few more before the year runs out. That will often mean two marathons in a weekend, with a flight in between.

The hectic travel schedule doesn't tire Holder. In fact, "it's more exciting than the marathon," she laughs. She travels light and uses flight time to write in her journal and check her schedule of upcoming races to be sure she's got all her logistics right -- though sometimes with the sheer number of events she's juggling, she overlooks something.

On Jan. 15 she had to scramble and drive from Corona to Phoenix for a marathon the next day. She had forgotten to book a flight. That wasn't her lowest moment, though. The altitude of the Leadville, Colo., ultramarathon sapped her strength, she said, reducing her to tears, and heat exhaustion knocked her out of one 50-mile event.

Holder no longer needs to train and requires no recovery time, but does Pilates twice weekly to strengthen her lower back. "My body likes it (the walking)," she said. "I don't like running. It hurts my knees."

SpeedFactory 426 Charger race car has set a new world record

On January 23rd a SpeedFactory 426 Charger race car has set a new world record in the LX community by running a 9.45s @ 145 mph in the quarter mile.

The 426Charger is powered by a GEN III 426 HEMI stroker motor that delivers a total of 900 hp. A curb weight of 3,750 pounds was achieved by removing the interior.

With this time, SpeedFactory bested all previous quarter mile times set by actual production LX/LC-platform cars- modern Dodge Chargers, Challengers, Magnums and Chrysler 300C.

SpeedFactory, in collaboration with partners Landmark Dodge Chrysler Jeep, Vortech Superchargers and Paramount Performance, built this car from a 2006 Dodge Charger platform utilizing a unique combination of heavily modified stock components. The SpeedFactory R&D (Research and Development) Charger is a test platform for high horsepower technology destined to power SpeedFactory’s production vehicles.

A GEN III 426 HEMI stroker motor is boosted by a Vortech centrifugal-style V-7 YSi-trim supercharger and is controlled through factory electronics, producing over 900 HP. The car retains modified factory components: transmission, IRS differential with 1000HP half shafts, suspension and shocks. A curb weight of 3,750 pounds was achieved by removing the interior.
