world's largest ice maze - Buffalo festival

Let it be known the world's largest ice maze measured 12,855.68 square feet and was constructed in Buffalo N.Y. for the 2010 Buffalo Powder Keg Winter Festival.

So says Guinness World Records.

A representative from Guinness was on site to measure the maze and issued a proclamation to festival co-chair Jeff Empric this morning on the plaza of HSBC Center, where the world's largest ice maze was constructed for this weekend's winter festival.

"Congratulations," said Amanda Mochan, a Guinness World Records adjudications manager, "and welcome to the Guinness World Records family."

"We can't wait to bring people down here and show them what a great festival this will be," Empric said as he stood in front of a podium made of — what else — ice.

The maze was completed last night, Empric said.

It breaks the old world record for an ice maze set in 2005 when the Pontiac Ice Maze was constructed during a Toronto festival using 1,940 blocks of ice and measuring 8,280 square feet.

It also was done at a fraction of the cost.

When organizers of the Buffalo festival decided to go for the record, they found out the Toronto maze cost more than $300,000.

But Buffalo was able to pull of the feat thanks to donations and volunteers.

Artic Glacier Ice company donated the 2,200, 300-pound blocks of ice.

Local businesses and foundations chipped in with $20,000 to have the ice trucked to HSBC plaza.

Dean Sutton Architects designed the maze, and some 50 volunteers spent the past week building it through snow, freezing rain and melting temperatures.

Largest Cruise Ship in the world - MS Freedom of the Seas

world largest cruise ship picture, world largest cruise ship photo, world largest cruise ship video, world largest cruise ship image, MS Freedom of the Seas, Royal Caribbean International, Guinness World Records 2010, largest cruise liner passenger ship.
MS Freedom of the Seas is a cruise ship owned and operated by Royal Caribbean International. It is the namesake of Royal Caribbean's Freedom Class of cruise ships, and can put up 3,634 passengers and 1,300 crew on fifteen passenger decks. Freedom of the Seas was the largest passenger ship in the world.

The Freedom of the Seas was build at the Aker Yards drydock in Turku, Finland, which also is building the other ships of the Freedom Class. Upon its completion, it became the largest passenger ship ever built, taking that honor from Cunard's RMS Queen Mary 2.

Freedom of the Seas is 2.4 meters (7 ft 10 in) narrower than QM2 at the waterline, 6 meters (20 ft) shorter, has 1.5 meters (4 ft 11 in) less draft, is 8.3 meters (27 ft) less tall and 10 miles per hour (16 km/h) slower. Freedom however is the larger ship in terms of gross tonnage. While its gross tonnage was estimated to range from 154,000 GT to 160,000 GT, its official rating by Det Norske Veritas, a Norwegian marine classification society, is 154,407 GT, compared with QM2's 148,528 GT. Freedom of the Seas had the highest gross tonnage of any passenger ship yet built, until the 2009 completion of the MS Oasis of the Seas.

The ship has three swimming areas: an interactive water park, a dedicated adult pool and the main pool. There are two adults-only whirlpools cantilevered out from the ship's sides, the Royal Promenade sports, a coffee shop, Sorrento's Pizzeria, a Ben and Jerry's ice-cream shop, Vintage's winery, the Bull and Bear Irish pub, and many Duty-free shops. The 13th deck has a sports area with a rock climbing wall, the Flow Rider (an onboard wave generator for surfing), a miniature golf course and a full size basketball court. Other items include an ice skating rink, a casino, a Johnny Rockets restaurant, Wi-Fi capabilities throughout the ship, flat panel televisions in all staterooms, and cell phone connectivity.

The exact length of Tran Van Hay's unwashed hair was unclear but some estimates put it as long as 6.8 metres.

China's Xie Qiuping is on record as having the world's longest hair, measured at 5.6 metres in 2004, according to the Guinness World Records.

Hay began to let his hair grow more than 50 years ago because he often got sick after a haircut, the Vietnam News quoted his wife, Nguyen Thi Hoa, as saying.

Media reports said he lived a simple life as a herbalist, but his hair could complicate things. Reports said no motorcycle taxi would carry him because he could not wear a helmet. In the daytime he balanced his hair on his head like a basket, protected by a scarf.

Hay, whose hair weighed several pounds, died at home Wednesday in the southern province of Kien Giang at the age of 79, Vietnam News said.

Sachin Tendulkar world record - Biggest one-day score

Sachin Tendulkar confirmed his status as one of cricket's all-time great batsmen on Wednesday, adding the highest individual one-day international score to his list of world records.

The 36-year-old became the first player to score a double-century in the 50-over format as India thrashed South Africa by 153 runs in the second match of the series in Gwalior to take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Tendulkar surpassed the previous record of 194, which was jointly held by Pakistan's Saeed Anwar and Charles Coventry of Zimbabwe, to take his record total of runs to 17,598 in 442 one-day internationals played.

He passed three figures for the 46th time, and has now scored 17 more one-day centuries than his closest rival Ricky Ponting of Australia.

Tendulkar, one of India's most popular sporting heroes, also holds the records for most runs and most centuries in the five-day Test format.

"I don't know how to react to this," he told reporters after being presented with a silver bat to mark his 20 years in the sport.

"I would like to dedicate this double hundred to all the people of India who stood with me for the last 20 years. I really appreciate their support. This is for all the people in India."

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni hailed his teammate, with whom he added an unbroken 101 at breakneck pace.

"Even when he's tired and can't play the big shots, he's very clever to use the pace of the bowler," Dhoni said. "It's very difficult for the bowlers, they don't know exactly where to bowl, so I think he batted really well."

Tendulkar made only four in India's victory in the first match on Sunday, but batted throughout the home team's innings of 401-3 as he made exactly 200.

Tendulkar put on 194 for the second wicket with Dinesh Karthik after the early departure of Virender Sehwag for nine with the score on 25.

Tendulkar scorched to his 50 from only 37 deliveries before Karthik became Wayne Parnell's second victim, having made 79 off 85 balls with three sixes.

Yusuf Pathan matched Tendulkar's ferocious scoring rate as he clubbed 36 off 23 deliveries, adding 81 with the man known as "the Little Master."

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni then joined in with a rapid 68 off only 35 balls, hitting four sixes, while Tendulkar reached 200 with a single off Charl Langeveldt in the final over.

As well as three sixes, he hit 25 boundaries -- the most in any individual one-day innings -- in his 147-ball knock.

South Africa set the record for highest run chase of 438-9 against Australia in 2006, and needed to score the third biggest mark to overhaul India's total.

But the tourists did not get close, being dismissed for 248 with 7.1 overs left in their allocation.

A.B. De Villiers top-scored with an unbeaten 114, his fifth one-day century, but the Proteas' next best was 34 from opener Hashim Amla.

Recalled seam bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth took three wickets for India, while Ravindra Jadeja, Pathan and Ashish Nehra claimed two victims each.

World's Most expensive medicine - Soliris

CHESTIRE, CT, USA -- Soliris, a drug made by Alexion Pharmaceuticals, which is given intravenously to treat a rare disorder in which the immune system destroys red blood cells at night, costs $409,500 a year -setting the world record for the Most expensive medicine.

The disorder, paroxysymal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH), hits 8,000 Americans. Patients do not have to dig that deep to pay for the drugs. Insurance covers most of the costs - and there is help with high co-payments or for those with no insurance.

Alexion spokesman Irving Adler said the high price of Soliris reflects several factors, "including an $800 million investment to develop the drug," as well as a 15-year investment of time.

In March 2007, Soliris was approved by the FDA for the treatment of the blood disease paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, or PNH. In June 2007, the European Commission approved the drug for PNH patients in 29 countries.

Last year Soliris sales were $295 million. Since Alexion started selling Soliris two years ago, its stock price is up 130%.

Three other drugs cost more than $350,000 per year.

Shire Pharmaceuticals' ( SHPGY) Elaprase ($375,000 per year) treats an ultra-rare metabolic disorder called Hunter's syndrome.
Just 500 Americans suffer from the disease, which causes infections, breathing problems and brain damage. Last year domestic sales of Elaprase were $353 million.

Naglazyme from BioMarin Pharmaceuticals treats another rare metabolic disorder and costs $365,000 a year, according to investment bank Robert W. Baird.

Viropharma predicts that sales of its Cinryze, a treatment to prevent a dangerous swelling of the face, will increase from $95 million last year to $350 million several years from now. The drug costs an estimated $350,000 a year.

World's strongest boy set world record

The world's strongest five-year-old is muscling in on a new record after performing a series of astonishing 'air' press-ups.

Romanian Giuliano Stroe - who has been trained by his gymnast dad Iulian since he could walk - stunned TV viewers in his homeland by almost doubling the current world record of 12.

The body-building youngster pulled off 20 of the special press ups - where the legs never touch the floor - before stopping.

Giuliano became a worldwide sensation after videos of his strongman feats became a You Tube sensation.

Last year, he managed to get into the Guinness Book of Records after performing a jaw-dropping handstand stunt on an Italian TV show.

He performed the fastest ever 10 metre hand walk with a weighted ball between his legs in front of an astonished audience.

Dad Iulian, 33, explained: "He has been going to the gym with me ever since he was born.

"I always took him with me when I went training. But he's still only a child and if he gets tired or bored we go and play."

Were he able to don boxing gloves, bob and weave, his 111kg (17.5st) mass would allow him to fight as a heavyweight. And if he could dribble and shoot, his 2.2 metres (7ft 3in) would make him the envy of the NBA.

But seeing as his paws – not to mention several sporting rules – disqualify him from either pursuit, "Giant George" the Great Dane will instead have to content himself with the title of world's tallest dog.

George, who lives with his owner, David Nasser, in Tucson, Arizona, has clinched the Guinness world record after his stats – 109cm from paw to shoulder; 220cm from head to tail – were confirmed by an official adjudicator following some controversy.

The lofty canine saw off competition from the previous record holder, a four-year-old Great Dane named Titan, thanks to his extra three-quarters of an inch.

The breed appears to have the title sewn up: before Titan took the 2009 crown, the glory belonged to Gibson of Grass Valley, California.

"This is a hotly contested record and after some controversy and conflicting media reports we decided to send our own official adjudicator to put the final stamp on this record holder," said Craig Glenday, the editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records.

"We can indeed say now that George is the top dog."

Those who do not keep a behemoth in a kennel or a leviathan in a fishtank need not be disheartened, however. The company is now searching for other, less obvious record-breakers such as the smallest dog (length), the dog with the longest ears, the oldest dog, the smallest cat and the oldest cat.

"This record has sparked great interest in finding other pet records, so we're asking everyone to check their dog houses, scratch posts and under the bed," said Glenday. "They just might be living with a record-breaking pet!"

The world's largest igloo is now sitting in Green Bay after more than two months of difficult team work by a group of prospective record-setters.

"I think we were all really relieved," says group leader Paul Steckart. "We broke out some champagne, had a couple drinks and kind of just sat there and stared at it."

The current world record was set in Canada by a group of engineers in 2008. Their igloo came in at 25 ft 9 in across and 13 ft 8 in tall.

The so called Bigloo that Steckart's group has built in Green Bay registers in at approximately 27 feet across and 17 feet tall.

"It's been 9 weeks since we started on it."

Throughout that time they have received all the proper paperwork from Guinness and just need to get all their documented information in order.

The next and final step - they will have the Bigloo officially measured Monday.

"We're going to have it on camera through one of our local TV stations. We'll have a notary and a witness." explains Steckart.

KATMANDU, Nepal -- A man who is only 22 inches (56 centimeters) tall left his home country of Nepal on Sunday in a quest to be recognized as the world's shortest man. Khagendra Thapa Magar is traveling to Europe to campaign for the Guinness World Record title. He applied to London-based group for a place in the record book in October, soon after turning 18, but said he has not received any response.

Magar's family initially filed a claim when he was 14, but it was rejected because he was not an adult and there was a chance he might grow.

They say doctors in Nepal have not been able to explain why Magar is so small.

"We are going to Italy to try to record his name in the Guinness Book of World Records," his father, Rup Bahadur Thapa Magar, told reporters in Katmandu. They plan to appear on an Italian television show to talk about his bid for the title.

Once in Italy, Magar, his father and a supporter will decide on their next destination.

His supporters saw him off from the Nepalese capital on Sunday, offering flower bouquets and garlands.

The current record is held by He Pingping of China, who is 29 inches (73 centimeters) tall.

India’s Northeast state, Mizoram will be attempting to set a new Guinness World Record on ‘Largest Bamboo Dance’ locally known as ‘Cheraw’ on March 12, 2010. Around 11, 500 participants in unique colorful tribal costumes from all walks of life within and outside the state will perform this mega event exactly at 2:00 p.m. making it the ‘Largest Bamboo dance’ ensemble.

The Assam Rifles Ground not being big enough to hold so many performers at one time, dancers will attempt the world record on the main roads of Aizawl covering a stretch of 3 kilometers, which is expected to make it not only the ‘largest’ but also the ‘longest Bamboo dance’ in the world. The event is being organized by the government of Mizoram.

The ‘Bamboo dance’ is the most colorful and distinctive dance of the Mizos requiring special skills and a nimble mind to perform. The dance is believed to have originated way back in the 1st century A.D., while the Mizos were somewhere in the Yunan Province of China, before migrating to the Chin Hills in the 13th Century A.D., and eventually to the present Mizoram state of India. Some tribes living in South East Asia have similar dance forms in one style or the other with different names.

The world record attempt will coincide with the celebration of the state’s biggest festival ‘Chapchar Kut’, on March 11, 2010 at Assam Rifles Ground, Aizawl.

The state’s popular festival engages people of all ages, young and old, men and women dressed in their colorful costumes and distinctive head gears and unique beads, assemble and perform indigenous games, folk dances, singing traditional songs accompanied by beating of drums, gongs and cymbals. Handloom and handicraft of tribal arts are displayed for sale which goes together with luscious traditional cuisine. Modern music competition is sometimes held at this event.

It is important to note that Meghalaya, India’s popular Northeast tourist destination had recently set a Guinness World Record for the Largest Guitar ensemble.

RAS AL KHAIMAH // It seems to be becoming the regular refrain for Ethiopia-born elite athletes competing in the top road races in the Emirates: “There is always next year”.

For the past three years, Haile Gebrselassie, the greatest of them all, has trotted the words out through gritted teeth, after seeing his prospective world-record bids miss the target at the Dubai Marathon.

Yesterday it was the turn of Elvan Abeylegesse, the Addis Ababa-born woman runner, who landed the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon title at her first attempt, yet was left wanting more.

“I tried to set a world record,” said Abeylegesse, a native Ethiopian who became a naturalised Turk through marriage. “It didn't happen but I will try next year."

The race organisers had predicted a fast time ahead of yesterday morning, and they were proved correct. Abeylegesse may have missed out on the world record, but she did set a new course record at 1hr 7min 7sec, 11 seconds quicker than Dire Tune's record last year.

It was also personally satisfying for the 27-year-old runner as it confirmed her return to full fitness.

Abeylegesse claimed silver medals in both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, yet 2009 campaign was hindered by an injured Achilles.

However, she showed few visible effects of that problem in RAK.

The triumph in the Emirates will add further fuel to Abeylegesse’s European Athletics Championships hopes. She will go for gold in the 5,000m and the 10,000m on the track in Barcelona in July.

Mare Dibaba, who was a former Ethiopian national teammate of Abeylegesse before yesterday’s victor became a naturalized Turk, finished second, six seconds off the pace.

Longest Pizza in the world set world record

Police blocked South 35th Street as a helicopter hovered above. Crowds of people craned their necks to get a better look.

his was history, after all. A world record.

A line of pizzas stretching the length of two football fields, from end zone to end zone.

"Excellent!" Scott Van Duzer exclaimed, as St. Lucie County Sheriff Ken Mascara announced the final measurement Saturday: 722 feet, 1 inch.

"I didn't start for nothing," said Van Duzer, owner of the Big Apple Pizza and Pasta on South 35th Street and the man behind the record.

Van Duzer said he was looking for a way to build support for his fledgling Van Duzer Foundation, which provides money to local families hit by tragedy. So he searched pizza-related records at the Guinness World Records Web site about four weeks ago and found the category of "longest line of pizzas."

"There was no doubt we'd beat it," Van Duzer, 41, said of the previous record of 611 feet, 2 inches, which was set in 2006 in Treviso, Italy. "It was just a matter of how much."

About a dozen people helped make the pizzas in the middle of the night, starting three days before Saturday's event, Van Duzer said. They went through 500 pounds of flour, 250 pounds of mozzarella and 30 gallons of pizza sauce for the 722 pizzas, which were given away after the official measurement.

world's Longest Pizza picture, world's Longest Pizza photo, world's Longest Pizza images, world's Longest Pizza video

Van Duzer asked the public for donations for his foundation, which will give part of Saturday's proceeds to Allen Civita, the St. Lucie County firefighter who lost his Palm Bay home last week to wildfires.

"I was just so overwhelmed," Civita said. "All these years the community has helped Scott, and now he's giving back."

Van Duzer's record isn't official yet: Mascara and Public Defender Diamond Litty have to hand-write statements on official letterhead, attesting to the record. The statements then have to be notarized and sent to Guinness for consideration.

"My job was to make sure the pizzas were touching," Litty said.

Van Duzer didn't get to rest after the official measurement: He was manning the oven, heating pizza slices for the hundreds of people who turned out for the event, which also featured bounce houses and a dunk tank.

Van Duzer said the real achievement was raising money for families in need.

"People need money when a crisis happens," he said, "not weeks or months later."

DALLAS - It was the "shot heard 'round the world,'" and a world record, set by one of our own Orlando Magic players.

On Saturday February 13, during NBA All-Star Jam Session in Dallas, Magic man Dwight Howard entered the Guinness Book of World Records by hitting the longest basketball shot while sitting down. After nailing one from half-court, Howard scooted back to 52 feet and six inches, flicked his wrist, and made history.

"I was just having fun. They asked me to do it before we got to Dallas, to 'break your own record,' and it was all in the wrist," Howard told FOX 35. "I talked to Reggie Miller before it and he said just flick your wrist, and it worked."

A Swiss diver has broken the world record for holding his breath underwater - for 19 minutes and 21 seconds.

Freediver Peter Colat, 38, said the first 12 minutes without air were 'no problem' after plunging into a water tank at a holiday fair in St Gallen, Switzerland.

Mr Colat smashed the previous record held by Italian Nicola Putignano by 19 seconds.

Under the rules for so-called 'static apnea' laid down by the Guinness World Records, Mr Colat was allowed to breath pure oxygen for ten minutes before the feat yesterday.

He said afterwards: 'The first 12 minutes were not a problem and I felt the first need to breathe very late, but because of this it was even stronger.'

Magician David Blaine set a world record in 2008 when he held his breath for 17 minutes and 4 seconds, breaking Mr Colat's previous record of 16 minutes and 32 seconds on Oprah Winfrey's talk show.

According to the British Freediving Association, participants must 'enter a very relaxed state so as to minimise oxygen consumption.'

Orlando Doctor Has Collection of More than 10,000 and an Entry in the Guinness Book of World Records

There's something just a little different about Orlando's Dr. John Meisenheimer. The Orlando physician is recognized by both the American Academy of Dermatology and the Guinness Book of World Records, as CBS News correspondent Richard Schlesinger reports.

Meisenheimer knows his patients know about his obsession.

"It's pretty hard to walk in my waiting room and not," he said pointing out posters and displays of yo-yos. "I think everybody knows my love for yo-yos."

Meisenheimer has more of them than anyone else in the world. Part of his house has been turned into a museum-quality display of roughly 3,000 yo-yos. One dates back to 1790 in Britain. Another can be dipped in kerosene and lit on fire. Another has an internal compartment with teeth - it's meant for medical marijuana users to shred up their pot.

There are more in boxes in the attic. The total may be 10,000. He's lost count.

"It's such a piece of Americana," Meisenheimer said. "And it's the Nintendo of the 1930s, 40s, 50s, and even in the 60s. That was the toy."

Even today Meisenheimer toys with his acquisitions; he shows Schlesinger a trick.

In the process of collecting all these yo-yos Meisenheimer has made a serious study of them as well. He's now the chairman of the history and collecting committee of the American Yo-Yo Association. (Yes, there is one.) And he wrote the book on Yo-yos that's on display at the Smithsonian.

Dr. Meisenheimer has made his place in yo-yo history with not only the largest known yo-yo collection - but also the largest known yo-yo. It's about the height of a man and stands in his yard. He founded it on EBay; it had to be delivered by forklift.

Schlesinger gives Meisenheimer a one more for his collection: a yo-yo bearing the CBS logo.

So now the number of the Meisenheimer collection is about 10,001.

Largest Pumpkin in the world

Jackson township, Ohio, USA, Christy Harp, a local High School math teacher, has grown a 1,725 pounds pumpkin-which sets the new world record for the Largest pumpkin. Christy Harp and her husband, Nick, have been growing giant pumpkins for the past eight years.

For Christy, growing gargantuan gourds has become a personal challenge since the eighth grade, and is now a bit of a hobby at the family farm. This year, she and her husband decided to have a little contest. "Last year he beat me by 200 pounds. This year I beat him by 400 pounds. Very good year! My pumpkin, my side of the patch! We separate the patch and never step foot on the other side!" Christy says at one point in August, the pumpkin was growing 33 pounds a day.

Her secret to growing such a large pumpkin? "Pulling all the weeds and being out in the patch lots of hours," she said, noting that the boulder-sized pumpkin grew at about 33 pounds a day. "We filled up the soil with lots of compost, coffee grounds, cow manure, and then we pick out seeds with good genetics."

The previous world record for the Largest Pumpkin was a 1,689 pounds set in Rhode Island in 2007 by Joe Jutras. For her efforts, Christy Harp won the $2,500 cash prize for first place and bragging rights for the next year. Hers was the heaviest pumpkin weighed at the annual Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers weigh-off at Parks Garden Center on state Route 62 in Green Township. "We've always felt that the big pumpkin for any one of us is a victory for all of us,” said Tim Parks, owner of the garden center and a director of the OVGPG.

When it was all over, Harp and her husband, Nick, were hoisted onto the shoulders of some of the men she'd dethroned, and they all celebrated her victory. Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers director and secretary/treasurer Alan Gibson said some of the seeds from the winning pumpkins will be available for the club's seed auction, which is planned for 8 p.m. Nov. 28 and 29 on the club.

He explained that one seed can go for as high as $30. Proven seeds, such as seeds responsible for world record-holding pumpkins can go anywhere from $200 to $500 per seed on the Internet. If that records holds after the Circleville, Ohio Pumpkin Festival, her pumpkin will go on to New York City and be carved by a master carver on Times Square.

Organizers at the University of Alberta attempted to shatter a world record by hosting a 1,000-person dodgeball game. And while the Edmonton Sun notes that "it will be several months before officials from the Guinness World Records verify the accomplishment," the attempt appears to have been successful.

The previous record, set at San Diego State University, was a 450-person match. Alberta students and staff obliterated the old mark by organizing an epic showdown with 1,200 participants. Scroll down to see footage from the event.
